An excellent technical resource
The nonprofit sector is a huge part of the American economy. Nonprofits range from multinationals to your local little league. While, technically, the same body of tax laws applies to all of them, the level of sophistication varies as dramatically as the size of the nonprofit. And while the big nonprofits can afford to buy expertise, smaller nonprofits have to manage more of the tasks themselves. This book can help. Very comprehensive "hornbook."
In mid-1999 I read this treatise in conjunction with the author's one day course on the Law of Tax Exempt Organizations.The book is essentially a "hornbook:"a summary of law geared towards lawyers andaccountants, rather than the casual reader.It would be especially helpfulfor lawyers and accountants in outside firms who counsel a variety ofdifferent tax exempt organizations and are confronted with questions of howto structure an organization or several related organizations.Thematerial is valuable but no easy slogging, so if you can take the course(which in mid-1999 was approx. $230 and included the book), it would beworth the extra $70 or so.

Helpful
The study guide is helpful when used along with the textbook.There is a summary of each chapter with plenty of T/F questions to determine if you understand the material from the chapters, and there are detailed explanations for false answers.

This book along with the Student Survival Guide was a great help to me. I just walked out of class with a 100 on my last test! Now for the final. Not near as nervous because these books have pushed me to remember the information that I normally wouldn't. Great buy!! ... Read more

Great book
I do agree with the former reviewer. This is a great book if you do want a comparative perspective of corporate law. It is concentrating on how different legal systems have solved the same problems with minority shareholders, agnecy costs etc. with examples from Japan to US to Europe. We are using it as required reading ontwo different law school courses.

Decent Book
This is a decent book.I am a 3L law student thinking of doing collections.This book is an excellent choice for the average person with no legal education.As a law student though I always expect more though but it does set out the basics in an unbiased manner with the law printed in the appendix.Definitely worth the price.
Collection Agency Harassment: - ok
so -so review, Mostly common sense. But a few good tips on mounting a counter attack although it doesn't let you know the practicalities of enforcing the FDCPA, namely that federal and state agencies typically don't respond to your complaints except with a form letter and no action.

Good coverage
Many people get al excited when they first try to get into the music business only to get shot down by the many intricate twists and turns involving all the legal aspects of running a record label. Mountains of forms and paperwork with no understanding slowly stack up on the producer's desk with no end in site. The situation is a cry for help and that help comes in the form of information, information obtained by reading this very interesting book that details all that is involved with law aspects of this kind.

A must-read.
This book is hella boring, but its definitely a necessity for anyone involved in music. It clears up a lot of questions, and a lot of things you might have never even thought about. Reading this book is a must if you want a grasp on legal concepts. I also suggest "101 Music Business Contracts" from Platinum Millenium.

Necessary book and usefull information!
this book isnt all its cracked up to be but has plenty of really good onformation and examples hide inside it. from how to negotiate a contract to many other laws and such this book covers mainly all of it. for a better less boring book that has plenty of examples in it i suggest the book by ty cohen "101 Music Business Contracts" you cant go wrong with that one! ... Law 101: Everything You Need to Know About the American Legal System
This is a great introduction to the different fields of law. This uses recent cases that show now only how the legal field works, but how it has run amuck.

Good so far
Before my first year classes started I had read most of the parts that were applicable.The reading definitely gave me some sort of foundation and framework for understanding all the information they throw at you in law school.Some of the reading is a little dry, but compared to some Marshall opinions you'll read for class, this book's a breeze.

Heavily academic in dry, concise, and reasonable format
For what it worth, the book is intended for classroom study. It is dry, dense, and concise with heavy emphasis on the history of law and its role in society. The author has relied on few anecdotes to demonstrate how the law is applicable to dispute resolution. Those linger along many chapters and require the reader to follow closely each anecdote in order to discern the applicability of the law.

I go to Harvard law school and I have found this book to be helpful in my field of study. Although i also study criminal justice law I have now become interested in environmental and this book has been impressive. This book is a life saver. It was classy and sophisticated. Please go buy this and I hope to see some new challenging faces at Harvard. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

This is an outstanding book.
I've used this book in two seated classes and one online course on environmental law. If you want a glorified HAZMAT course or have decided that the way our legal system actually operates doesn't matter, then look elsewhere. This is not a science book (nor should it be). If you want a text that students find easy to read and that provides comprehensive coverage of environmental law and our legal system, this is your book.

An Outstanding Book!
I've used "Environmental Law" by Nancy K Kubasek and Gary S. Silverman in two seated classes and one online course. It is an outstanding text for describing the parameters of our legal system to students. Next to case law, I find Burton's Legal Thesaurus indispensible in writing appellate briefs. I only wish it were available in a downloadable form for use with my word processing program.
