5-0 out of 5 stars More Than a Great Book--It's a Public Service
This is more than a great book--it's a public service. The 5-0 out of 5 stars The bible of independent film producer
If you are or want to become an independent film producer, this book will give you all of the business/legal knowledge of filmmaking you need.Even though I have not finished the book yet, I've already found this book to be extremely valuable.Because I am planning to produce a new film next year, I even called up Mr. Tulchin directly for legal advice. He was very friendly and took the time to give me great advices and was very knowledgeable in not just U.S. based entertainment law but also international entertainment law as well.Read this book and you will find it worth more than what you paid for!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The 'business' of 'show business' explained
One thing that isn't taught that much at film schools is how many contracts are generated and how much time you spend negotiating deals. Our first film is still in post-production (April 2003) and we already have a filing cabinet filled with contracts and paperwork. I wish this book had been available when we started production. The chapter on delivery requirements alone is worth every penny. In it you'll find out what a distributor will want along with your film.Don't forget the still photographer on the set and behind the scenes!Great and easy read, too. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Action-oriented, thoughtful, careful, & effective lawman & victims advocate.
Joe Arpaio has secured his place in law enforcement history as an innovator & a worthy public servant. August Vollmer, Sir Robert Peel, & Clarence Kelley now have a new member to their club. All cops & politicians should read & learn from Sheriff Arpaio's book & so should all business managers & executives. Sheriff Arpaio exemplifies unorthodox simplicity in the pursuit of public safety & budget effectiveness. It's no wonder that the liberals hate him!

5-0 out of 5 stars Take it easy on the criminals.....
and you will end up without a civilized society, which is basically what we have now. I am a criminal trial attorney with 25 years experience and 15,000 cases. Atty Robbins, who writes a review also, seems upset that criminals are being treated like criminals. What a novel idea the sheriff has !!!Obviously, the problem is that a lot of folks do not like to see criminals actually punished. And therein lies our problem. The problem is not with criminals as much as it is our unbelievable tolerance for them. The book is a great read for anyone who wishes to see criminal offenders pay for their crimes. People like Atty Robbins are outraged at the treatment the sheriff metes out to the offenders but is strangely and disturbingly silent about their victims.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a man!
We need more men like Mr. Arpaio.Today the government seems to go out of its way to define and protect "prisoner's rights," while lacking any hesitation to trample over the rights of us law-abiding citizens.Arpaio dispenses justice much like a dispassioned referee does at a football game - if you commit the offense, you recieve a penalty, and your sob stories don't buy you so much as a pillow mint.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good coverage
Many people get al excited when they first try to get into the music business only to get shot down by the many intricate twists and turns involving all the legal aspects of running a record label. Mountains of forms and paperwork with no understanding slowly stack up on the producer's desk with no end in site. The situation is a cry for help and that help comes in the form of information, information obtained by reading this very interesting book that details all that is involved with law aspects of this kind.

4-0 out of 5 stars A must-read.
This book is hella boring, but its definitely a necessity for anyone involved in music. It clears up a lot of questions, and a lot of things you might have never even thought about. Reading this book is a must if you want a grasp on legal concepts. I also suggest "101 Music Business Contracts" from Platinum Millenium.

This book (textbook) is an excellent resource for just about everything in TV. The disk included is a great utility to have for printing out your own contracts. I only with this book could be updated, say, every two years.

I felt like I could have an intellegent conversation about any aspect of the television business after using this book. It is my main resource for getting quick answers that are easy to understand. This is required reading for those getting started and a great resource for those that have been in the industry a while. It also includes a computer disk containing forms such as U.S. Copyright registration and others found in the book that you can import to your word processor.5-0 out of 5 stars Imagine the Future, Study the Past

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic!!!!!!!!!
As soon as I bought the book I could not put it down I read it from top to bottom non-stop. This book is an easy read and very applicable. I highly recommend this book to gain greater insights in the Music business or any business. It was a great buy along with a couple of manuals purchased from Musicbrains.net entitled the Indie label Kit onAmazon, Music business 101, future of music and Guide to releasing an independent record by Tim Sweeney.

4-0 out of 5 stars excelent
The music industry world ins an alien environment for most of the emerging artists and many need guidance to avoid scams and legal glitches, this book can be a good guide in defeating those lawyers that try to fool you into a deal. Despite the depth and professionalism , the book it isn't the best out there,” Music Business & Entertainment Law Contracts for Indie Recording Artist, Labels, Songwriters, Composers, Producers, Managers and All Others in the Record Industry. Binder / CD-ROM set (PC & Mac)" by Ty Cohen is far better when dealing with all the aspects and it includes viewpoints from different men in the industry, and also includes clear and easy to understand examples

5-0 out of 5 stars Real World Advice from a Real Guy - Highly Recommended
Not only is this book (and it's prequel, "Confessions of a Record Producer") the real deal, so is the man who wrote it. I was so impressed by his first book that I contacted him as a consultant on a producer/artist agreement I was negotiating (I am a producer). My goal was to come up with something that was actually fair to both parties and Moses got us to that point quickly. His suggestions were works of innovation that surprised and satisfied everyone.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Poorly edited and researched
I'm completing an independent study on entertainment law, and more specifically, copyright law and how it pertains to filmmaking. I got this book among several others, and was a little surprised at how poorly written this book is. First off, the editing is TERRIBLE: there are spelling and grammar mistakes ALL OVER the book! On some pages it's outright ridiculous. Honestly, who proofread this before publication?
2-0 out of 5 stars Very Mediocre

5-0 out of 5 stars A fine and thorough book
Litwak provides about as much as a professional could share in this throrough outing. He also shares 'boilerplate' contracts for virtally all key players in a film production.Of course, direct experience is the best teacher, but EVERY neophyte in film or television must own this book, and its a handy reference for seasoned professionals and part-timers.5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best book on contracts for film/TV
Mark Litwak's book is by far the best book available on film and television contracts. His book is a no nonsense, thorough guide to the complex world of contractual law for an industry that has a history of taking advantage of those who don't take the time or spend the money to hire good legal representation. He is an advocate for the rights of artists, writers, actors, etc., and his contracts are a good basis for negotiations and deals in the TV/Film industry. Even if you hire your own attorney, this book will help you understand the structure of your deal and alert you to details and potential booby traps in all that fine print.D. Kuspa ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Make your agent read this...but you should read
This is a great resource for dealmaking, but most actors and writers that I know aren't negotiating their own deals. The trick is to get your agent to work harder at creating opportunities, so that they actually have deals to make. Yes, your agent should read this book ... but for myself, as an actor/writer the book HOW TO AGENT YOUR AGENT...is my bible. It helps me kick my agents in the butt ( without them knowing)and I get results...they're working harder and I'm getting work. Also I liked that book with all the casting directors pictures...just in case you see them in Starbucks and want to say hello.

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete, informative, funny-- what more can you ask for?
I was afraid when I picked up _The Biz_ that it was going to be a dry read-- legal aspects of any business are not known for being a scintillating read. However, I am happy to report that it was not only a quick and interesting read, it was a genuinely funny one. Moore had me laughing out loud on several occasions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent thought points for entrepreneurs -- speed does kill your competition
Disclaimer: I have worked as an early stage Venture Capitalist for roughly two years, worked with several Angel investment groups in California and gone to business school. My perspective on the book is based on my investing experience and my time working with high-technology start-ups.
3-0 out of 5 stars Simple management philosophy that worths a read
I think most people understand the importance of "speed" in the marketplace. The problem lies in "how" to incorporate this element into their daily business before they or their companies had been eaten by someone else. I am sorry that the author had not done a good job in this respect. He said a lot about the advantages of being speedy, but not practical methods of pushing it through bureaucracy, redtape, human resistance to change, the long term committment of top management......... Perhaps I had demanded too much from such a small book. However, I really believe the author is capable of giving us more, judged by his smooth and intelligent writing skills and choice of words. 4-0 out of 5 stars Good
Lots of good stuff. Some you'll have read in other books, but that's not a negative if such info is presented in a new way, as it is here. I do think the choices of AOL and Hotmail as fast company examples were dumb choices, since Hotmail never actually turned a profit, it just grew to become an enticing buy for Microsoft, which is when the owners cashed in. AOL's troubled history is famous enough I need not repeat it here. But the other companies chosen (Charles Schwab, Clear Channel, among others) as examples are "legitimate" companies, aiming for profit and succeeding while growing quickly. And it's because of those examples I recommend this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Valuable Resource if Stuck in Contract Legalese
If you've ever received a book contract from a general publisher, it can be a frightening experience. I know firsthand because I have a number of these contracts in my files--which I have negotiated and ultimately signed (and the book was publisihed). Also I know how it feels to be the editor negotiating with the writer or the literary agent, since I'm an acquisitions editor for a book publisher.

This book shows you a sample contract then breaks it down and explains every little piece. There are many alternative clauses too, showing you how to retain different rights and territories, handle secondary rights like audio and movie, and so on.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Excellent for writing Author/Publisher contracts from the perspective of the Publisher. Explains each clause in the sample contracts, gives many many variations, and helps protect the publisher from many events that (in my experience) other lawyers/books did not include in their contracts.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars very cautious
You can't complain about a lawyer making sure you know exactly how bad things can get--it's their job.The one problem I have with "Risky Business..." is that the author goes to extreme great pains (sometimes the reader's) to disclaim any potential harm that might arise from the reading of this material blah-blah-blah... There are several legal agreements presented with descriptions; that's good. There is very little explanation of how the money works (who gets what and where it says so in which agreement); that's not so good.As an overview to how complex this field is, the book is good. The point of all of it is, essentially, if you get this far in movie-making, get an entertainment attorney who knows how to protect you, 'cuz there's no way you'll be able to do it on your own.Glad I read it.Now I can pass it along to someone else. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Not too helpful for fine artists
Though the author is clearly well informed about tax strategies, this book doesn't sufficiently address the needs of fine artists. The book seems to make the assumption that careers in the fine arts are straightforward. The book includes sections for specific disciplines, but those are not very in-depth. I did not get much more information from this book than I got from a general tax guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Succinct, accessible, superbly presented information

3-0 out of 5 stars It's okay... but save your money for a more thorough book
This book has been in my collection for a long while and I do reference it occassionally, but for the money a better book is Stephen Langely's "Theatre Management and Production in America."Also, "Producing Theatre" by Farber is good too.If you just need some really basic nuts-n-bolts, "The Stage Producer's Guide..." is not bad.I give it a 3 out of 5.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good reference but something missing
It covers a lot of things that a neophyte producer might not think of but it doesn't cover a few things that I would've expected. One thing- it doesn't mention anything about forming an LLC (Limited Liability Company) in relationship to producing theater and there's almost no coverage of negotiating an "enhanced" production with an existing non-profit and commercial venture which I believe is the way that many new plays and musicals are developed and first presented.
