5-0 out of 5 stars Uncle Eric
Best Book I've ever read on Economics. Should be in every school system.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Personal and Practical Advise For Financial Security
Maybury begins in discussing mental models or paradigms and how all data we obtain used to support or work with our internal models and how everyone has them and the failure of many educators to understand when obtaining data. We build models, sort data and there's an excellent outline of rules to weigh the evidence. Rather than simply trust the experts, we need to look more towards the hard sciences at least in business and financial security. Now to learn and teach models, in many cases simple stories are more effective than technical data.
5-0 out of 5 stars Short and sweet
This is the kind of book you'll want your kids to read. It's short, sweet and simple. Maybury points out how we build mental "models" to understand the world. The two best ones for economics and law (and the ones that Maybury uses) are the Austrian School of Economics and the British Common Law. Essentially they're two sides of the same coin, so they reinforce each other. If you understand the basics of both of these models, then you'll have a leg up on 99% of the people in the world in understanding how things work. You'll be doing your children a great favor by teaching these models to your them. They certainly won't learn them in public schools, which pour masses of facts into students heads but don't tell them how to related them to each other, and the world. Maybury shows you how to correct this major--and tragic--error in education. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Primer on U.S. Law
While this book would not interest a legal professional, it is an excellent basic text on U.S. law for the lay person or beginning pre-law student. The simple definitions and descriptions make the law approachable and gives a good basis for future legal study. It also could serve well as a shelf reference for a family library.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good basic text for a high school law class!
I bought this book to use as a resource to teach a law class to Juniors and Seniors at a Charter School for motivated learners. This book has been a godsend when it comes to structuring my course, as there are NO TEXTBOOKS out there that cover the wide spectrum of the law, without fluff or opinion.I hope to adopt this book as our class text book for next year, as it is so information-packed and so informative that I find myself practicallylecturing right out of the book!I recommend it to other teachers, and to anyone who wants to learn about all the types of law.It would be very helpful to students considering a career in the law, who want to know what types of law exist. It is also a convenient-to-carry size with larger type so that it is easy to understand and read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and easy to follow.
Very thorough and easy to follow.Provides a solid understanding of the legal situations that a layperson is most likely to fall into.Overall, extremely helpful. ... Read more

I bought this book because I need to decide where my mother should live.I was surprised at how much information it had.It helped me think about all the choices.I think we're going to try to work out a way to help her stay at home and the book had lots of really practical stuff about doing that.I understand Medicare and Medicaid now and the differences between the kinds of facilities.I liked the lists and the worksheets that really helped me get organized. The book also helped me think about what I want to do when I get older.I think this is a good book for anyone dealing with an older parent. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars What Guide?
There is very little guidance in this book. Douglas spends more time telling stories than actually giving guidance. He gives no help about the interview process or any detail about the different phases of testing. I am sure his profiling career was exciting but I think the times have changed to much for him to give advice for present candidates.

1-0 out of 5 stars Author is out of his element
After reading the author's "Anatomy of Motive" and "Mind Hunter" books, I can tell you that he is a much better storyteller than a career book author. This is unfortunate and disappointing, because his other books are much better written than "Guide to Careers in the FBI." It appears that he tried to apply his storytelling style of writing to his career book, and it does not work.

2-0 out of 5 stars 15 bucks down the drain
"Guide to Careers in the FBI" has too many war stories and not enough of the advice you'll need in such a competitive arena. I was hoping for much more substance. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT guide for a first-time buyer
My roommate works at the library and brought me home a dozen different books on how to go about buying your first home and what you would need to know (including the dummy/idiot books which I normally love). After taking a look at this one, I sent all the other ones back and ordered it from amazon because it is by far the easiest, most comprehensive, and overall helpful guide for a first-time buyer. It answers all questions and can just be used as a good reference. It's questions and answer format makes the book very easy to pick-up and less daunting-- some of the books seems like a giant boring novel!!I even gave this book as a gift to a friend considering buying a place of his own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good first book on buying a home
This is a basic book on home buying intended for the first time buyer. It's' fairly brief, only about 130 pages (minus the appendices), so it's a quick read. If you're a second time buyer it would probably be too basic for you, but I was looking for a quick primer before starting to read more technical books on investing in real estate.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Keeper Book
This well-written book helps debunk any assumption that the title "Why Lawsuits Are Good For America"may contain an oxymoron.Mr. Bogus describes a common law system that is very recognizable to those of us who practice law in America today. Jurors take their responsibilities very seriously.Jurors are fully capable of finding facts and applying nuanced statements of the law and crafting reasoned verdicts.Keep this book in your library and refer to it when you hear others fretting about whether jurors can handle emotional or big dollar cases.

1-0 out of 5 stars Depressing
The problem with this book is that it doesn't adress important issues facing our legal system today. If for example Ford motor company manufactures a SUV with a faultly shock system that fails and causes the truck to roll over resulting in serious injury or death, clearly we have an open and shut case where Ford is completely liable and you can certainly bet that Ford is going to make sure that problem never happens again. But that's obvious. Anyone who knows little to nothing about the law understands full well that a company who is found to have a faulty product will increase their standards and work feverishly to fix the product in order to prevent future legal action. Carl T. Bogus has taken simple ideas like those and twisted them around to create a driving force for his political agenda, and baseless political agenda no less.
4-0 out of 5 stars Disciplined Democracy
The author's central argument is that product liability lawsuits are an essential vehicle for enabling citizens to impose societal values on powerful corporations. The market can't do this because the profit motive can encourage corporate behavior that unfairly imposes business's costs on the public. Government regulation is often hamstrung by the pressures powerful competing interests bring to bear on the political process. But, combined with important safeguards built into the judicial process, juries bring diverse life experiences, societal mores, and a gut-level sense of fairness to important issues that impact citizens' lives. The common law enables the community to extract information from hard-to reach places and to provide a democratic check on the powerful. I would say the author made his case. ... Read more
