5-0 out of 5 stars How to live together without marriage and consider the methods and pros and cons of merging finances and lives
CFA's Sheryl Garrett and Debra A. Neiman's Money Without Matrimony: The Unmarried Couple's Guide To Financial Security finally addresses what is a major issue among co-habitating couples: how to live together without marriage and consider the methods and pros and cons of merging finances and lives. From owning property together to inheritances, partnership agreements, and other common obligations, Money Without Matrimony discusses many different arrangements and options.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid advice to be headed by all in these circumstances
A long overdue book, Money Without Matrimony discusses the myriad of financial considerations when two people are living together as a couple but are not married. In this situation there are many potential problems that can interfere with your planning for your future. The authors walk the reader down a solid pathway for financial advice by first examining why financial planning is important, determining goals and objectives, dealing with what assets belong to each person and which assets are jointly owned, dealing with insurance, taxes, estate planning, and retirement. And, of course, children raises another entirely different problem that needs to be examined in detail. The authors follow a well organized path that leads the reader from thinking about their goals through devising a total plan. The coverage is excellent and thorough and includes a discussion of such things as common-law marriage states and what to do about it.Other areas with surprises that are covered in detail include credit cards, life insurance, insurance proceeds, and inheritance. This is a complex field with many potential pitfalls and problems but also ripe with planning opportunities so that your wishes are met and assets protected.Money Without Matrimony is highly recommended for all unmarried couples.

5-0 out of 5 stars important advice -- heed it!
As a consumer educator, I've heard many stories of people whose finances were ruined by a partner. Credit problems from a failed relationship are a common problem. Money Without Matrimony offers very sound and comprehensive advice for couples, and I can't recommend it highly enough. I had the opportunity to interview coauthor Debra Neiman on my Internet radio show, EverydayWealth Radio: Your Consumer Advocate, about the book (if you want to listen it's archived online at wsradio.com) and she clearly knows what she is talking about and takes a compassionate approach to what can sometimes be uncomfortable topics to discuss.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must" read for US bound Canadians
There are three million Canadian citizens living in the United States (often traveling back and forth across the border), with almost two millions Canadians visiting Florida each years. Many Canadians and Americans incorrectly assume that the laws governing investment, taxation, and immigration are the same in both countries. They are not. And that's why The Border Guide: A Canadian's Guide To Living, Working, And Investing In The United States is such a timely and necessary book recommended to the attention of all Canadians coming into the United States for reasons of work, education, travel, investment, or residence. Thoroughly "user friendly", The Border Guide will help anyone from getting disadvantaged by the fluctuations between Canadian and American currency; quality for old-age and social security benefits on either side of the border; obtain the best that the Canadian and US medical systems have to offer; receive Canadian pensions in the US almost tax free; even how to buy a retirement home and deduct the mortgage interest from Canadian tax returns. All these and so much more make The Border Guide a "must" read for US bound Canadians! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars wow
This book is absolute gold! I can honestly say that the tips provided in this book have helped me and will continue to help me throughout my life. Martin Shenkman is a genius.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great advice for doctors and others.
As an attorney, I enjoyed reading this practical easy to read guide to asset protection.I have recommended this book to a number of my clients.
1-0 out of 5 stars Shallow and Disappointing
I had high expectations for this book, to which it didn't live up. I presumed, incorrectly, that Mr. Shenkman had specific experience as an attorney practicing in this area. My impression is that his writings on asset protection appear to be just a summarization of the writings of others, with little or no original thought. About halfway through this book, puzzled by its consistent shallowness, I finally did some research on Mr. Shenkman and found out that he seemingly just quickly cranks out a new book every time some topic heats up, such as his "How to Buy a House with No (or Little) Money Down". ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Protecting Your Finances
This book is a must read! The book covers so many topics such as: writing a will, protecting your business, protecting your assets, provides sample documents, and much more. This book has definitely expanded my knowledge about protecting my finances. I assumed these techniques were only available to wealthy people. I was so engrossed in the book I read it in two days. I have recommended this book to all of my friends and family.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read to Protect Your Family & Your Financial Future
This is a simple, easy to read book about how to protect your money, savings and your assets. It reads like a novel with good stories, yet it has information like a reference book that you can easily refer to over and over again.I had never heard of the authors before, but when I found out it was a Time/Warner Book of the Month Club Selection, I decided to give it a try, and I'm glad I did.You will be too.

4-0 out of 5 stars An interesting book on a not so interesting topic
This book is very readable and clear. It makes a potentially boring topic interesting and understandable. It is insightful and helps make the point that trusts are important for those with even just modest estates. It is abit repetitious at times and contains a few too many personal stories, butit is otherwise motivating and a very useful guide for those unfamiliarwith the legal world. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Detailed!!
Helps you to understand the complexity of marital debt/assets.In doing post-divorce mediation, the aftermath is worse than the initial filing of the divorce petition. Here we have two consenting adults reigning over the financial thrones of the other.Leaving their financial future in the hands of someone bitter will only gain negative results. What makes one think the court order will enforce resolution? The other party may not feel the urge to pay out of malice. This can lead to foreclosures, collection calls, garnishments, jdgements/liens, (ALL in YOUR name!!!) and frustration.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing but useful
This book was written by two distinguished experts on tax policy and reviews the development of the campaign to end estate taxes at the federal level. In many cases it is quite informative. But compared to Jeffrey Birnbaum's book on the development of tax policy in Congress (Showdown at Guccci Gulch) is it quite light in a couple of areas.
2-0 out of 5 stars Too partisan to prove useful
As a tax attorney, I was excited to purchase this book and get a non-partisan, in-depth look at what was going on with respect to the estate tax.Michael Graetz has a stellar reputation as a law professor, so I was doubly excited.
3-0 out of 5 stars Who knew?
My grandfather was born in the rural South in 1885. With little help from family and no help from his government, he put himself through college. He married, became a dairy farmer and sired seven children which he brought up and thoroughly educated (all seven went to college)during the Great Depression. Of those seven children, his four sons all became his working partners and one son lived and raised his own family on the family farm.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Thorough and Detailed Book
This is a good book to help prepare someone with an estate plan before consulting a lawyer. Depending on your situation, it might be easier to use this book and some estate planning software instead of paying a lot of money for an attorney.I think the key here is that this book will help motivate people to TAKE CARE OF YOUR ESTATE!After you read some of the stories that occur when people fail to do this you will be glad you have purchased this book.It certainly is not a substitute for an attorney, but it will help make the layperson ask those critcal questions as to what should be done with their estate after they are deceased. It talks about avoiding estate taxes, setting up partnerships, trusts, financial planning, life insurance, and gives some referrals to professionals in each one of these fields. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Protect Your Estate - by Esperti, et al
I bought the previous edition of this book several years ago and learned so much from its straight forward, well-organized and clear presentation (I am neither an accountant nor a tax person) that co-workers and family members began quizzing me on matters of estate planning. This book allowed me to answer many questions and also enabled me to have a very intelligent conversation with a professional estate planner. I consider the book such a valuable resource that I just purchased the updated edition.

I am an estate planning attorney, not affiliated with any of the author's companies, and I think this book is a "must read" for anyone who is serious about planning his/her estate.5-0 out of 5 stars Detailed overview in layman's terms
Outstanding book to educate yourself on estate planning. This book will prepare you for the planning process so you can understand what your estate planning attorney is talking about and what he or she is trying to accomplish for you. It also very clearly outlines the fallacies inherent in trying to conduct estate planning without competent legal counsel. The authors tell you know how to find competent advice and how to arrange conduct free consultation interviews with any prospective estate planning specialists.
