The Builder's Portable Handbook has tables and figures that are useful for all kinds of building projects, not just for professional builders.It has concrete and masonry information as well, but the reason I bought the book was for information on strength of lumber, joist sizing and spacing, and other properties of wood.I was pleasantly surprised to find a lot of information on framing styles, roof design, and geographical information.If you're doing any kind of building, this book would be a very valuable resource.I'm glad I bought mine. ... Is not what it ofers
Eventhough the introduction chapter of the book looks very promising, because it refers to some of the construction industry difficults/needs in achivieng consistent quality and customer satisfaction;when you read the contents there is no practical examples of "how to do it/implement it" in this sector. In general, it is another good interpretation of the ISO 9000 standars, it explains what do the requirements means and the basic implementation steps, but if you already know the standars and you are looking for help in the implementation process at a CONSTRUCTION company...this is too basic and it would hardly help to "land" the standar at your company. Also, for someone who is not familiar with the ISO 9000 group of standars, the book is difficult to follow, because it mix different standars requirements (ISO 9004-1,ISO 9004-2) instead of focusing in the basic requirements (then it would be ISO 9001) you need to implement a quality assurance system and then the other requirements you would need (i.e. ISO 9004) to improve your quality assurance system. ... a classic on the subject
Although out for a good while (since 1993) for books on building technology, this is still a good buy.Most of the information on applyiing good fire safety practice to building design remains applicable, although codes have changed somewhat since this edition was released.When the publisher releases a new edition, I predict that this book will continue to be as useful as it was when fresh out in late 1993. That the book continues to sell is a testament to its usefulness.It is simply a classic on a subject that few architects have investigated in depth.
