Editorial Review

The founder of the United States's most famous detective agency was a fiery political radical in his native Scotland before immigrating to America in 1842. The genius for organization and attention to detail that he displayed as a rebel stood Allan Pinkerton (1819-1884) in good stead as he shaped a national organization capable of pursuing criminals across state lines at a time when there was no federal law enforcement. Vividly depicting his subject's eventful career, historian James Mackay corrects longstanding errors as small as Pinkerton's birthday and as large as the canard that he provided Union Army General McClellan with faulty intelligence that prolonged the Civil War. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for All Gumshoe Fans
This biography of the inventor of the private investigation industry is not only a thrilling look at a fascinating man, it is also a fresh perspective on a slice of American history.I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in mystery fiction or detective novels, as well as anyone who is looking for a history book that isn't boring. While it may well be a bit biased, the presentation is thought-provoking and makes me want to research the period of the late Civil War/early Reconstruction more thoroughly.
5-0 out of 5 stars Mackay detects truth about Allan Pinkerton
Mackay is as talanted a literary detective as Allan Pinkerton was as a criminal detective, written in a clear style that's a pleasure to read. It's a well balanced account, explaining the character's actions in the context of the times.3-0 out of 5 stars Pinkerton review thorough, occaisionally too biased

5-0 out of 5 stars WITHOUT A DOUBT...O. J. IS GUILTY...
Any reasonable person who listened to the evidence at the so-called "trial of the century" knows without out a doubt that O. J. Simpson killed his ex-wife Nicole Brown and Ronald Goldman, the hapless waiter who was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. Anyone who watched the announcement of the verdict and saw the shock and disbelief on O. J. Simpson's own face, as the not guilty verdict was read, would know that even the defendant knew he was guilty.
4-0 out of 5 stars A No Win Situation - But A Good Book
I read four books after the trial. I read the Schiller 1000 page saga, Outrage, the present book and a book on Johnny Cochrane. Each book was different and gives us different insights.
4-0 out of 5 stars Race Decided This
It wouldn't have mattered who prosecuted this case. The jury were never going to convict OJ after the race card was played.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very interesting and thought-provoking, but needs editing
I liked this book a lot. It covers a variety of lawyers and law firms to give the reader a representative view of various law practices with seemingly questionable morals or ethical practices. It runs the full gamut, from Plaintiffs lawyers dealing with diet pills and breast implants, to securities class-action litigation, to lobbying, to white shoe law firms and David Boies. All these different lawyers are used to show much of what is wrong with many of the major players in the legal system today.
3-0 out of 5 stars So, So - No Great Insights!
Goulden points out that a 2003 Manhattan Institute study concluded that litigation settlements exceeded $200 billion/year, about 2% of GNP, and far more than any other country.(Eg. Dow Chemical sets aside $1 in 160 for litigation in the U.S., $1 in $40,000 in Europe.)Lawyers get about $40 billion of this.
5-0 out of 5 stars Must reading for law students
Joseph Goulden's latest book should be required reading for every law student. It might make them stop and think: "What am I going to do when I get admitted to the bar?Become a 'money lawyer' or be able to look myself in the mirror every morning and look my kids in their eyes when I tuck them in?"Based on extensive research and hundreds of interviews, Goulden's portraits of America's most powerful "money lawyers" are not pretty. The billion-dollar industry of class action lawsuits is described in all its greed. A Hollywood film based on his fascinating account and detailed analysis of the silicone breast implants class action cases would make "A Civil Action" look like a kindergarten sand-box squabble. "The Money Lawyers" is an eye-opening book for anyone interested in the law, and especially for those concerned about the future of the American legal system. And in conclusion, Goulden, offers some sound suggestions on what to do about rampant abuses. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Stars in Chambers
A short book that falls between pure court history and pure judicial biography. It is for readers deeply interested in the U.S. Supreme Court as an institution, and highlights four famous justices as they interacted in a period now over a half-century past. Using this time and these justices, William Domnarski gives his view on how the high court really works.
5-0 out of 5 stars Quite Interesting Portraits of Four Important Justices
This book is comprised of profiles of four leading Supreme Court Justices during the (roughly) 1940's through 1970's period. The author suggests he is dissatisfied with judicial biographies because they do not focus on the "dual nature" of the Court--i.e., the Court speaking through not only majority opinions but also via the individual justices involved in contributing to its opinions.Instead, the author posits the idea of "assessment-seeking judicial profiles" as a superior technique.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good story, even if somewhat self-serving
Bobby Simone was always a guy we in the press liked. As a newspaper reporter in Philadelphia in the 70s and later in New Jersey in the 80s and 90s, I frequently read about and heard about , and a few times actually met Bobby Simone.I covered the trial in Federal Court where he unsuccessfully defended Nicodemo Scarfo and I watched Bobby Simone successfully defend himself against income tax charges.(forget that old saw that a lawyer who defends himself has a fool for a client, Bobby won this case).5-0 out of 5 stars A book you can't put down and a story you won't forget!
This was a really great account about the life and times of "mob lawyer" Robert Simone. The author does not pretend that the account is objective, and indeed it is not. It is, however, exciting and intriguing to follow Robert Simone's story - from the beginning of his career to the height of his success and through his ultimate downfall, incarceration and back to Philly and a career in law once again. I could not tear myself away from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great Book
This is one of the best biographies ever written. A wonderful piece about an interesting man.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Magnificent Biography of a Fascinating Man
Take a fascinating subject-- Edward Bennett Williams. Add a highly-skilled author with remarkably deep interviewing and archival research skills-- Evan Thomas. Put in a lot of hard work. And presto-- you have Thomas' "The Man To See," one of the most thorough biographies ever written (I have read many hundreds).5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Excellent book
This is one of the best biographies I have ever read.It is a great story about a great man.I read a lot of biographies and I can tell when the author is fauning over his subject - just read some of Robert Slater's books on Jack Welch. Thomas book did none of that.Thomas made you feel that he was giving an accurate and true account of Williams life.Of couse Thomas was helped by selecting a subject that was larger than life, a one of a kind person both in legal talent and raw personality. This book is right up there with "Vince", Michael O'Brien's biography of Vince Lombardi.Interestingly, Lomardi and Williams were very much alike - both very religious yet profane, and above the rest of their competitors in their chosen fields. They were also both like to drink, were emotional and quick to say exactly what they thought or felt about something.I recommend this book to anyone who likes to read biographies about great men. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This book allows you to visit MY mountains
This book is a wonderful and gentle journey of one man who loved to be in the mountains! As an adult I started backpacking the very areas Douglas talks about in the book and have grown quite fond of the southern portion of the Cascades. Names like Darling Mountain, Fryingpan Lake, Fifes Peak, Old Snowy Mountain and Conrad Meadows - I've been to most of these places!
3-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Written Fiction
When I first read this book several years ago, I was truly inspired by it.This is a delightful story of a boy that overcame the seemingly insurmountable obstacle of paralysis (if memory serves, induced by polio) by forcing himself to walk in the mountains of the great Northwest, and eventually becoming a United States Supreme Court Justice.Finding his strength and his soul (and his paralysis cure!) in the wilderness, he would often retreat to the great outdoors. This is a story of his lessons, and his adventures.A wonderful read.

5-0 out of 5 stars An insightful look into the man who transformed our nation.
Although few people knew his name, Supreme Court Justice William Brennan became a force of history. Applying his belief that the Constitution and Bill of Rights was written for all Americans, Brennan shaped the nation byattaining majorities is such cases as Roe v. Wade and Texas v. Johnson(flag burning). His legacy is one of justice and equality, of cooperationand liberty, of criminal rights and human rights, of compassion, moralrectitude and courage. If you do not know this man, you do not know thegreatest force in constitutional law this American century has ever seen.Kim Eisler, using various sources, opened a window through which everyAmerican can see the Court, and one of its most important jurists, inlangauge we can all understand. The best book on the Supreme Court (and asupreme Justice) I have ever read. ...
