4-0 out of 5 stars Insightful, but Biased Look at the Justice System
This book gives a very interesting inside look into the world of criminal defense attorneys. The author gives her unique perspective on the law through stories of several cases she defended. While I found the book very interesting, especially her explanation of the Menendez case, I couldn't help thinking that she was giving only one side of the story and leaving out facts that didn't support her views of defendant's rights. Still, it was very enthralling and hard to put down.

2-0 out of 5 stars Dull But Intelligent
I have always liked the way that Leslie Abramson handles herself as well as being a fairly big fan of her courtroom practices. So, I went into this book with some preconceived biases.Well, they were all provenwrong.1-0 out of 5 stars State the facts please!
I have to question the factuality of the stories written in this book.My family is the subject of one of the stories Leslie chose to discuss in detail within her book.I have to say I was shocked and infuriated to findmy family story, including names and a picture sent to Leslie in aChristmas card, printed without our consent or knowledge. After theinitial shock I sat down to read the book and was again outraged at themany erroneous facts intertwined in our brief story.I have to wonder ifshe even looked at our file or if she just tried to pull from memory and/orembelish this brief condensed story of our life. I do not know all the lawsgoverning what you can or can't print in an autobiography, but I wouldthink that if you were writing about other people's lives, you should haveto state the facts and be able to substantiate those facts withdocumentation.I know that the 6 pages of this book dedicated to my lifestory has so many fabricated and outright false statements, it isimpossible for me to read any of the other stories with any degree of faiththat what I am reading is the Real story!I would recommend that anyonewho reads this book takes it for what it is, an autobiography about LeslieAbramson.Do not read it to understand the subjects of her cases or whatthe Real facts behind their cases were. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars This book helps one learn from the critical experience of others...
We learn by example and the profiles in this book have much to teach us. Among the significant examples is Penny Harrington, the first woman in America to lead a major metropolitan police department. As said by police historian Dorthy Moses Schulz, "Penny Harrington is one of only a handful of people who can claim to have changed American policing forever...." The lessons learned by Penny - and the important lessons she shares with others - can be read in her highly intimate autobiography, "Triump of Spirit," which was published in 1999. Penny is not only a criminal justice pioneer, she is a shining example of a woman who beat the odds and paved the way for all women who strive for a career in law enforcement. (The reviewer is the author of "Top Cops: Profiles of Women in Command," which also profiled Penny and 12 other brave women who broke through the brass ceiling of policing.) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars how the civil rights battles were thought
Judge Robert Carter gives a blow by blow account of the legal fronts of the civil rights struggle: the personalities involved, the infighting among them, the battles won, lost, and nearly neglected.Brown v. Board is well-told elsewhere, while other struggles receive overdue attention (e.g., the battle for the NAACP to preserve its member lists from scrutiny by officials striving to break the organization's back).
4-0 out of 5 stars A brief memoir
When reading about the history of the NAACP's and the Legal Defense Fund's struggle for human rights, we tend to hear more about Thurgood Marshall and not enough about Robert Carter, who was a integral part of the fight. After many years, Robert Carter has shared his perspective with us.

5-0 out of 5 stars A historical survey of how judges viewed their office
G. Edward White provides a fascinating and engrossing examination of how American judges have viewed their powers and responsibilities throughout history. He does so through a series of biographical essays examining each judge, or group of judges, and their jurisprudential views. While each chapter is capable of isolated reading, the whole really begins to come together only by the end of the whole book. We see the demise of the 19th century oracular theory of judging, seeing the judge as only discoverer and not creator of the law, and the various difficulties that 20th century judges have experienced in trying to replace this discredited theory.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful surprise
This is a wonderful biography. I knew that Tocqueville was a great thinker, but I thought that his life would be boring (has thought any story deserving to be told? Yes, this book does prove it). However, the author manages to narrate Tocqueville's life and times in such a way that I could not drop the book, and read it in less than a week's time. So I may not think of a better book to commemorate Tocqueville bicentennial anniversary and I fully agree and endorse as my own the other reviewer's opinion. ... Read more

Hillary Rodham Clinton is a touchstone for a generation. Supporters view her as a feminist icon, detractors as an enabler for her husband's constant philandering--and as someone with her own dangerous political agenda. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars No reviews since 1999 says it all
I got this book used and thought it would be interesting to read after the fact of HRC's moving on to other things.Without a doubt I believe the Clinton administration was filled with lies, deceit and well, just plain politics. This book is a discredit to thoughtful readers. I've only thrown away a handful of books in my life and this is one of them.

1-0 out of 5 stars Exhaustively researched, but horribly biased
I bought this biography because I have always been fascinated with Hillary Rodham Clinton's role in her husband's administration.I was hoping for an objective look at her contributions to policy, instead, this novel is full of acrimonious allegations and innuendo. It seems that the author is completely unable to separate HRC the person from her politics. This book is horribly slanted and I would not recommend to someone who truly desires insight into either one of the Clintons.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not necessarily a Hillary fan but........
I could not even finish the book. The negativity in virtually every chapter oppressed my soul.I wanted facts and to gain some knowledge about Hillary, and all I got was nausea.Milton's bias was oozing from every page. The information was second, third, and fourth hand, unsubstantiated, and based on assumptions and innuendo. It was like reading a tabloid that went on for over 400 pages.Milton spent too much time explaining what Hillary thought and what all of her "ulterior motives" were for virtually everything she has done in her life thus far.Did she know Hillary's inner thoughts by osmosis or through some Vulcan mind meld?Come on!Don't buy it, don't even check it out from the library.I would have given it a negative 5 rating, but that was not an option.A complete and utter waste of paper and ink. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A lot of Hurry Up and Wait for the next Good bit
... it took me nearly 1 year to finish reading this book ... not because I am bored with Watergate ... the book just had sections that just dragged on and on and on and on ... There are a few bits that were very interesting though like how a young person can & did one day find himself the lawyer of the President of the United States. I, too, would prefer to be Lucky than Good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Flying to Heaven, Crashing in Hell
In 1970 John Dean was interviewed as the next counsel to the President; a little over four years later he was in jail. He rose, and fell, by being a willing servant. Dean's office was the center of Nixon's intelligence operation (lawyers have client confidentiality). His story was recreated from documents and taped conversations. Dean was working for the Justice Dept. when he was asked about working at the White House by Bud Krogh. John Mitchell advised him that the WH "was not a healthy place" (p.12). (Was this relatively young lawyer recruited to be a future fall guy?) The expenses for the San Clemente complex had been safely buried in inconspicuous budgets (p.16). Dean joined the WH, and soon learned "to keep my mouth shut" (p.23). Dean learned how interior decorating kept political scores (pp.29-30)! He also learned how to move upwards in influence by traveling downward through power plays, corruption, and outright crimes (p.30). Just as he made it to the top, he actually touched bottom.2-0 out of 5 stars Dean was likely the principal bad guy here.
Nixon will always take the blame for the dishonorable acts of Dean and others. The book is interesting for the authors discussion of how power corrupts. But don't assume that he presents the true facts to us.Certainly G Gordon Liddy says this book is untrueful.Liddy recommends that one read Silent Coupe for the most likely truth.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Courage, Persistence, and Faith
Ricci's CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY is an essential read for anyone with a relative, friend, or client who suffers from mental retardation.Holding nothing back, Ricci recounts the horrendously inhumane conditions of Belchertown State School in Massachusetts during the 1950s and '60s, his formation of an advocacy group to support the retarded and their families, and a 20-year landmark federal court class-action suit to secure rights and protections for mentally retarded citizens.A work of courage, persistence, and faith.

5-0 out of 5 stars Keeping the Faith
This important work is an unvarnished first-person account of one man's lifelong battle to secure rights for the mentally retarded citizens of Massachusetts. With no holds barred, Ricci chronicles the plight of the mentally retarded in Massachusetts during the second half of the twentieth century. In a style reflective of his unrelenting advocacy, Ricci recounts the painful decision he and his wife made to place their six-year-old son at Belchertown State School in the 1950s, the horrific medieval conditions he discovered and exposed in that institution, his founding of Advocacy Network, that organization's fight against uncaring state bureaucrats, and their hard-won, landmark federal court order to improve the lives of the mentally retarded.Crimes Against Humanity is a must-read for anyone with a social conscience.

5-0 out of 5 stars At last the real Eliot Ness is captured
Paul W. Heimel has done a superb job of uncovering and relating the life and times of Eliot Ness, including the role that he and his team of "Untouchables" played in the destruction of Al Capone. Ness was a far more interesting and complex individual than the Hollywood characterizations of him. He was every bit as honest, diligent, and hard-working as his fictional counterpart, but also flawed in terribly human ways. The reader comes away with a deeper understanding of a very real, ultimately tragic human being. Heimel knows how to tell a story well and captures Ness's fascinating life without bogging the tale down in minutia. He provides clear images of Capone and a host of other characters, including FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover. The paranoid, delusional "G Man" was a neurotic tyrant who could not stomach Ness getting any publicity or credit, no matter how deserved, because he believed it upstaged him and his agency. Ness even merited one of Hoover's many secret files. Indeed, Ness seems to have been harmed by his own success in destroying crooked cops, politicians, and labor thugs, which inevitably made him enemies. His own inability to convert his exemplary public service into business or political success reveals him as all-too human. His final years, and the lack of any material reward for his deeds, are both moving and tragic. This is a real slice of Americana without any glamorization. Heimel deserves our gratitude for rescuing a wonderful man from both near-obscurity and horrible distortion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a book that gives Ness the consideration he deserves
The second edtion uncovers more information about Ness, disputing those who dismiss his exploits in helping the Treasury Dept. smash Capone's empire. It also disputes those rumors that he was a drunk. The real man is shown here with all his humanness and surprise, he's doesn't come up short. He finally gets the consideration he deserves as a lawman.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE book on Ness
Eliot Ness was a legendary lawman in the twenties and thirties. But entertaining as they are, the various Untouchables movies and television shows don't paint an accurate picture of him. Read more

Response time was very short. You couldl tell that the book was used, but nothing beyond what would be considered "normal" wear.Overall conditioin was very good.

5-0 out of 5 stars A superbly researched and written biography of Hugo Black
This superbly researched and written biography of Hugo Black recreates for the reader the times in which the Deep South was bound up by traditions of white supremacy and how a Southern white man developed a judicial philosophy and temperament to help end America's legal segregation and restore a simple justice that was the hoped for outcome of the American civil war, but which had been undercut by the development of a "Jim Crow" social order of repression and segregation. Biographer Steve Suitts provides new and pivotal information as he lays out the story of Black's personal and public life, provides new perspectives on the sweeping forces that shaped the destiny of Black's life, and the struggle for racial justice in the first quarter of the 20th century. A work of impressive and accessible scholarship, Hugo Black Of Alabama is a highly commended addition to community and academic library American Biography and Judicial History collections.
