Classics of Public Administration
The selected readings provide a useful reference to classic publicadministration literature.The writings are presented in a generalchronological order covering topics important to the various time periods. The book could be improved with an updated edition of current literature(stops around the Carter presidency.)An index would be helpful.Overall,a worthwhile addition to one's political science library.I refer to itoften.

It will help managers catch up on their sleep
With prose more sleep-inducing than general anesthesia, this tome (at least it feels long) microwaves managerial cliches until you wish to forgo a career in public service.Avoid at all costs.

Slender, readable, more than adequate
A small book on a large subject--But the shorter length makes it more likely to be read. The book has a series of chapters on the expected topics, like dealing with hiring, firing, and the personnel system. It is a worthwhile book, but doesn't have anything startlingly new or original.Still one of the few books to treat this subject from a practioner's viewrather than an academic one. If the subject interests you, I'd suggestreading Haass's "The Power to Persuade" in addition to (notinstead of) this book. ... Read more

BORING AND UNORGANIZED
This book is one of several required reading for the Stanard police supervisor promotion exam.If Stanard is using this to make up their test, it is little wonder people are rising to a level of their own incompetence.This book is boring, poorly organized, and generally full of complicated sentences that even a PHd would have trouble understanding.Although some ideas are good, the book does not flow well and therefore many concepts are lost in this wordy mess.Wake up Stanard, Municiple League, and administrators!A good supervisor should never be picked based on her/his ability to digest this type of ridiculous thrown together nonsense.

Defective Police Supervision
This book is crammed full of good and useful ideas ranging from basic motivational psychology to the latest trend in "Community Policing".Some of the chapters really hit home and spell out clearlythe problems and potential solutions facing modern police departments.However, a lot of the material is buried and hard to piece together due topoor wording and chaotic organization of the topics.This is especiallyannoying since the book is a common source text for many police promotionalexams. As a supervisory reference, the book has a lot of potential. Unfortunately, due to the rambling paragraph structure the book fallswoefully short as a source text and will leave the reader scratching hishead in confusion as he struggles to draw out specific terms, definitionsand outlines. Another setback is that the book is almost identical to theearlier 2nd edition.This hardly makes it a worthy purchase unless, likemyself, you have to have it for a promotional test. Unless it isrequired reading, I suggest getting the 2nd edition at a used book storeand saving some money.If this is a required test source at yourdepartment, consider finding the accompanying study guide to decipher thekey concepts.Read more
