4-0 out of 5 stars Eye-Opening Cultural Study, both in method and results.
Male Fantasies is a book I wish many, many people would read. The writing is long-winded, the author's ideas are sometimes (in Volume II) flaky, but the content of the book is too good for this to matter.Theweleit studies the art and literature of a particular group of men--the Freikorps--who were essentially disaffected former soldiers in Germany after the First World War.These men developed their own groups and their own culture, and became the firsts-in-line to man Hitler's new army in the '30s (the Brown Shirts and Black Shirts). What is so fascinating about this book is that it approaches the study of this group by looking at the images of women in their writings.Initially, the author goes in great detail over letters these men wrote; then he looks at their magazines and novels. It turns out that through their images of women, a whole vision of human personal and political reality can be decoded.A particular vision of women (a complex typology of types of women: the mother, the sister, the white nurse, the red nurse, etc.) turns out to be intimately interwoven with a fascist approach to human life--AND this vision turns out to be the core of a great deal of our own imagery and political self-perception.The first 225 pages of Book I are the crucial part to read, and then you can skip around through the rest of Volumes I and II as you see fit.The discussion of Freud and Medusa in this section and the discussion of the notions of deterritorialization and reterritorialization in the work of Deleuze and Guattar are specially valuable segments. This book is also a good introduction to some important Weimar-era history, especially regarding Rosa Luxemburg and the Spartacists.I recommend this book to anyone in the humanities and to any generally intellectually minded adult. If you take the time to get into it, it will change your perception of some important things.

5-0 out of 5 stars Richly and persuasively detailed history
A deeply felt and extensively documented look at the lives and times of these men in Weimar Germany. The author looks unflinching at the Freikorps men, precursors of the Nazis, with all that they have very different from most of us today--and all they have that is all too common with us today. But here I am stressing the conclusion. The point is, he honestly gets his conclusions out of huge amounts of documentation on everyday life. These men represent an extreme, of course, but their motives and life-conditions were very close to many people in the Weimar Republic. It is a great book on that period, which also relates that time to our own.

5-0 out of 5 stars fascism is psychoanalysis in reverse
Examines fascism as a Reichian phenomenon gone awry - the fascist male experiences ego-dissolution in early infancy, finds itthreatening, and so builds for himself a "body armor" within which are contained such "female" traits and emotions(unaknowledged) as weakness, fear, guilt, etc. Through repetitive conditioning and a brutal pedagogy, these negative, shadowyperceptions are then projected outward onto the despised classes of scoiety and made to represent the chaotic forces of thecollective cultural unconscious. Like Adorno said, "fascism is psychoanalysis in reverse." ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not comprehensive enough...
The essence of every encyclopedia is to cover the largest number of topics (entries) pertinent to the field in study. Although Housing is a vast term and can encompass many things, this book has clearly missed a huge number. If my memory serves me right there is no mention about neighborhood concept, very little on new urbanism, nothing on smart growth, ecological villages and sustainable communities...there is much more missing, this is only a part. As I said it is tough to include all, but take a note of the upcoming Encyclopedia of the City from Routledge (editor Professor Roger Caves from San Diego) and you will see what an encyclopedia means. This book needs a 2nd heavily revised edition. I don't envy the editors at all, it is a horrible task to do something like this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Catherine, Called Birdy
I think the book Catherine, Called Birdy is a great book for young people like myself. In the book, Catherine is trying to get through her life of being a 14 year old girl who's father is making her marry whoever he wants. How would you like it if you mother or father was making you marry whoever they wanted.I know that I wouldn't like that.Everyday she has to write in her diary and tell how her day went. Her good friend went off with her uncle and they were going to get married but she found some other rich boy and married him.I gave this book 5 star because it had love, action, sadness and much more.I think that is what makes all books good. With a little bit of everything. When you start reading this book you won't want to stop.Everyday we have to go through life no matter what.Catherine had to go through some very hard times. With the prospect of her best friend marrying her uncle and her dad making her marry whoever he wanted, but she was still able to put the past behind her and go on with her life. That's what we should do when we face hard times.Just remember the name Catherine, Called Birdy

5-0 out of 5 stars evidence of the weakness of public policy?
The basic message of most essays in this book is that growth management and inclusionary zoning simply don't matter as much as their vigourous critics suggest: that neither program does much good or much harm.

Editorial Review

In their efforts to find a safe, quiet, traffic- and crime-free place to live, more and more Americans are turning to gated communities--self-enclosed developments barricaded off from surrounding neighborhoods, often using security guards to prevent intruders and screen visitors, sometimes even privatizing services traditionally left to local government. 1-0 out of 5 stars Nothing to recommend it.
I've studied the "Gated Community" debates for years, professionally, and this book hasn't a single original idea in it--the research is rehash, the conclusions tepid, and the writing itself is sallow at best, and sophmoric otherwise. One suspects this project was designed for Ivory Tower purposes, as the authors give no indication of ever having been involved in Urban Planning in any way--a necessary prerequisite for a monograph such as this, I'm afraid.5-0 out of 5 stars Response to Irving Texas--the authors
This is a response to Irving, Texas. The book contains plenty of crime statistic, in fact the best ones available. Perhaps the reviewr is talking about a diferent book.3-0 out of 5 stars A for effort, but fails a critical test
The authors of "Fortress America" had the resources and effort to put together a very good book on the subject of gated communities.Unfortunately they also had such a strong desire to prove their point thatthey fail to include the most relevant information... crimestatistics.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent study on the development of communist North Korea
In The North Korean Revolution 1945-1950, Charles K. Armstrong argues that North Korea was not simply the result of an externally imposed communist system strictly controlled by the Soviet Union - and that Kim Il Sung was not a hand-picked Soviet puppet.Instead, he argues that North Korea, though created under the umbrella of the occupying Soviets, developed a uniquely Korean form of communism forged from the experiences of the various Korean communist groups that returned or re-emerged after liberation.Throughout the book, Armstrong strives to demonstrate the uniquely indigenous Korean aspects of the social formation of North Korea into a communist state - particularly those that contrast the Soviet national model and the type of socialism imposed more strongly on the Eastern European states.Read more

An important part of the ABC-CLIO "Contemporary World Issues" series, American Homelessness: A Reference Handbook offers an informative survey of homelessness in the United States since 1980, as well as federal, state, and municipal efforts to solve this persistent and growing problem. Now in an updated and expanded third edition (fifty percent of the material is new), all of the pertinent laws regulating homeless people in public places are covered, as well as the results of federal funding, along with housing, health issues, and state policies affecting the homeless. An essential, core reference for academic, governmental, advocacy organization, and community library reference collections, American Homelessness also offers a series of insights into homelessness in Western Europe, Canada, and Australia. ...
