1-0 out of 5 stars Read Every Page Completely
Just like half listening to a conversation at a busy diner, reading this book quickly will not give you a very good impression of the "meta-meaning" that lies within.I was extremely curious to read this book, having heard both sides of its story.I picked up my copy and in one hand held it, and in the other several of Fuller's books covering the same time period.
3-0 out of 5 stars View from a Volunteer & Supporter of HFH since its beginning
We thought Ann Coulter reached the height of deceit and meanness in her latest book.Leonard has gone her one better. Not only has he demeaned the one who founded and nurtured Habitat for Humanity into a great movement, he is trying to re-write history and take Millard Fuller's place in the story. This is as sad as it is ridiculous.
5-0 out of 5 stars Friends who always give.
Music of a Thousand Hammers is a very thoughtful presentation of the life the Leonard's have spent in the years since Paul retired. It gives the way he became associated with Habitat and the ways he and Judy have tried to help the organazation.I have known them for thirty years and have never met anyone who is more generous or less likely to expect priase for their efforts. They believed they needed to go to Americus to help Habitat and I know them well enough to know that it was critical time for the organization.Habitat is stronger and the organization now has a way to continue into the future and grow. Habitat is the work of the thousand hammers and the thousands of people who believe in the philosophy of giving a hand up instead of a handout. It is not one person's idea anymore or one couple's organizaton. It is a movement that takes a volunteer and turns them into a believer in the business of helping build communities. It takes a potential homeowner and teaches them how to be a neighbor and friend within a community. Magic happens on Habitat builds and the Leonards show in this book how the magic comes about. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Carol exposes the south in a raw and realistic way that even Sally Mann hasnt yet been able to capture.
This book is simple and small, and great. Burch-Brown having lived in VA for years knows her surroundings well and proves it with this book. I would also suggest checking out her web site and looking at some of her other amazing work. I may have a skewed view of her work because i happened to be lucky enough to have her as a professor. But her photos really speak about the area she lives in, and having lived there myself, and grown up in that area i have seen this reality myself. I think the contrast of sad and funny, creates a series of photos that tells a story without the long narrative often needed in a collection of photos

3-0 out of 5 stars Fixed mobiles.
This should have been a neat little book with the simple task of revealing trailer folk in words and images but I thought that many of Carol Burch-Brown's photos didn't quite work, either the compositions were too bland (page twenty-seven) or they were too tight on the subject. Not helped either by being printed in a 133 screen so they all have a very grey look and lack contrast. Another omission is a lack of captioning, just who is the teenager (page thirty-nine) sitting in a chair next to an elderly lady in bed, is she his mother, relative, neighbor? Who is the happy mom (page ninety) holding a baby, is it hers, her sister's, a friend's? I would class these photos as reportage rather than arty images and as such they cry out for some sort of explanation.
