1-0 out of 5 stars Intern's Screed Masquerading as Informed Criticism-- This Book is Badly Written and Researched
Bad, both as history and as analysis, even the neo-Marxist sort that it unabashedly mimics. It's an embarrassment that the author has managed to turn this screed into an academic career as an expert on "public diplomacy."That she has done so offers a lesson on ambitious self-promotion in the academic world. She purports to tell the story about the former USIA, and ends telling no story at all.
1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing and misleading
The pamphlet (so it describes itself internally) is titled as if it were a discussion of the US propaganda establishment, but is in truth a sketchy and afactual memoir of a two-year Clinton-era
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Work
I had never heard of the United States Information Agency until I read this book. Among other public diplomacy (read: propaganda) duties, the USIA is responsible for Radio Marti, the pro-US propaganda beamed in to Cuba and the Fullbright scholar program. The reason those of us living in the US don't know too much about the USIA's mission is that they are not allowed to use their propaganda skills on US citizens, even though their predecessor organization, the Committee on Public Information (CPI) was created during the Wilson administration specifically to convince the people of the US that fighting the Germans in World War I was critical to the security of the American homeland. 5-0 out of 5 stars Perceptive and Concise
Bureaucracy is the clearest and most concise version of the calculation critique of socialism. This books is vastly easier to read that the original 1920 article on socialist calculation. It is far shorter and more focused than Human Action. It is also much shorter than Socialism, an Economic and Sociological Analysis. Mises managed to achieve brevity without sacrificing much important content. Bureaucracy is probably his best written book.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Free-Market Perspective on Big Government
This is a short economic tract from the acclaimed Austrian economist known for his stern defense of free-markets.Mises' sharp verbal logic and analysis of the adverse affect that bureaucracy, socialism, and a bloated public sector has on the economy. This book is a classic.I recommend reading in tandem with his other classics like Human Action, Liberalism in the Classical Tradition, Socialism. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars For the Discriminating Only
I'm a training specialist by trade, and I have taught Sexual Harassment Prevention and Equal Employment Opportunity classes for many years. This book allowed me to appear as a subject matter expert because I was able to offer more depth in specific cases and topics. If you're discriminating about your sources, I know you will buy this.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful
I read this book in order to survive a law class.I also used it when I had an interview with the Office of Civil Rights. This book may feel cursory but it covers a large array of material. For those who are constantly suspicious about facing discrimination in the workplace, it may be especially enlightening.Though I gave my copy to a friend not involved in the law, I do worry about it being misused by laypeople. For example, you could be blatantly discriminated against, and this book may point to cases that reflect your own situation. However, if you missed a statute of limitations or your employer doesn't have a sizeable number of workers, etc., your case may be a loser.Still, filing with local anti-discrimination office is supposed to be free and of no prejudice to the worker.Since this summarizes the everyday law, it is not a cute, easy read. But it is useful. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great for classroom use.
I have used this text in my public administration ethics class for two years and I am using it again this year (Fall'05). Few works I have employed as texts present the ethical issues actually faced by administrators and their intimate relationship to public policy as well as this book does. It is well written and certainly speaks directly to students in a way that gets and holds their attention. Finally, recent events have born out Hilt's findings concerning the drug industry dispite critics who appear to resent his conclusions on an ideological basis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Plus Ca Change
Hilts' readable book is the best introduction I know to the history and politics of FDA regulation. That history, as Hilts retells it, is a spiral.Clearly, there have been significant regulatory innovations since the days of T.R., and Hiltstakes us through the key turning points. At the same time, the same core arguments about the virtues of regulation and the virtues of free markets recur.
4-0 out of 5 stars The friendly side of the FDA
As with many institutions, the FDA servers a perceived needed purpose. This book is a history of why the agency was needed and its design. It is filled with horror stories and how the FDA came to the rescue. Some of these stories even scared me as I recognized the products and or brands. The chapter "Capitalism in Crisis" reads more like a political statement against capitalism than a "FDA is out to help" statement.
