5-0 out of 5 stars Trial Bible
There is not really anything anyone can say about Trial Techniques, other than it is the Trial Bible for all up and coming litigators (and even many current litigators).A staple of America's law school classes, Trial Techniques iswonderful guide to not only give order, but an advantageous edge, to one's trial preparatons.Professor Mauet puts forth useful information in an easy to use format. Not only is he a great writer, but a wonderful lecturer on his techniques. 4-0 out of 5 stars Written in '97 and very True Today
This book is very true. There is an old Irish proverb, "The Road to Hell is paved with good intentions".
5-0 out of 5 stars "Brown" Was Wrong: Response to Lewiston
Yes, "Brown" was indeed wrong, if wrongness is judged by adherence to the Constitution, at any rate. More important, the Bill of Rights was never intended to apply to the States, but as a check against the power of the federal government. Berger is entirely consistent with the Constitutional understanding of those checks embodied in the Bill of Rights. Second, there are no such things as "civil rights." Wake up. All rights mentioned in the Constitution, if you assume that the Constitution is what it says it is, are given by a Creator (thus the "Liberty" mentioned in the Constitution is one of that Creator's "Blessings"). "Civil rights" are man-given, and man-taken-away; as such, they are worthless. "Civil rights" is chiefly a shibboleth emanating from the illegal 14th Amendment. In short, the Bill of Rights is not worth the paper it was written on if it were to apply to the States.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pure Honesty
Regardless of liberal, revisionist history, the Fourteenth Amendment was never intended to be, nor was it used by, its ratifiers to enforce thorough-going racial equality in the United States. To the contrary, the Amendment was designed to give newly emancipated slaves equality under protective laws, not equal application of all laws.In laymans terms, the Amendment guranteed minimal civil rights (the rights to enter into and enfoce contracts and police protection, but not full social or political rights. Thus, even progressive Northerners did not see state-mandated segregation as violative of the Amendment in any way. And, contemporaneous Jim-Crow legislation, both northern and southern alike, demonstrated this original, limited understanding of the scope of the Amendment.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Life of Hoover Written
This book is widely, and rightly, regarded as the best and most accurate biography of J. Edgar Hoover. Without an axe to grind, Mr. Powers presents the man, warts and all, in the most believable version of him among all the books existing on Hoover and the FBI. This is the gold standard.

Editorial Review

This encyclopedic look at the Federal Bureau of Investigation takes advantage of changes in the Freedom of Information Act to move beyond the typical glamorized or sensational portrayal of this government agency to a scholarly, evenhanded account that places it within a greater historical context. It may be textbook in nature, but the guide still makes for entertaining reading, especially its "Notable Cases" chapter, organized by decade, which covers John Dillinger, the murder of Medgar Evers, Watergate, the World Trade Center bombing, and the Unabomber, among others. Another chapter examines the role of the G-man in popular culture over the last century by looking at the portrayal of agents in comics, movies, TV, and radio. Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Many glaring omissions
I'm doing a research project on J. Edgar Hoover and while I found this useful, easy to use and fact filled...its just amazing when you compare it to other reference materials on the same subjects. All the bad stuff has just been completely left out! In one case that I have found so far they have even gone so far as to outright lie! It's a good jumping off point for sure, but this has definitely been a lesson in checking facts for me, you really have to be careful what you believe.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book for background information
The FBI Comprehensive Reference Guide is a very good resource for background information on the FBI. I have never seen a better book on the history and workings of the agency. I would recommend it, along with "FBI Careers" (by Thomas Ackerman), to anyone who is seeking FBI employment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for FBI overview.
"The FBI: A comprehensive reference guide" is a great book for information on FBI history and organization. I learned a lot about how the FBI carries out its mission by reading this book. This is a terrific reference. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars He Only Followed Orders
This book was written to deny the claims of Anthony Summers that Hoover dressed in women's clothes at orgies. Given that the lack of corroboration, that claim is easily refuted (p.41). Curt Gentry's book told that Hoover's real crime was filing false expense reports. Athan Theoharis argues that Hoover's disinterest is organized crime was the result of a "lack of accountability"!! Hoover was not from a wealthy and powerful family, his career depended on pleasing powerful politicians by using his personal skills and talents (p.79). Hoover was first promoted under Wilson, kept his job under Harding, Coolidge, Herbert Hoover, and then Franklin Roosevelt (who increased his powers). Hoover curried favor with powerful businessmen (p.40), and also sought information to stay in power (p.72). Hoover didn't investigate syndicated crime as long as the ruling Power Elite wanted that. Congressmen controlled the FBI budget, and Hoover got along by going along. [After the US Secret Service investigation sent a Senator and Congressman to jail, their budget was cut.] Naval Intelligence worked with organized crime during WW 2. Hoover's statement "no single individual or coalition of racketeers dominates organized crime across the nation" (p.17) is still true today; read that closely. Hoover collected scandalous news a necessary self-protection in the political jungle of Washington (p.72). If Hoover concentrated on left-wing groups rather than La Cosa Nostra he was just following orders (p.139).
5-0 out of 5 stars Hoover Critic Debunks Summers
Academic debunking of Anthony Summers' scandalous "Official and Confidential" superbly researched and written by a noted critic of J. Edgar Hoover. Summers' bestselling volume used uncorroborated gossip and hearsay to "prove" the late FBI director was a closet homosexual and transvestite blackmailed into submission by organized crime. Theoharis, author of such previous works as "From the Secret Files of J. Edgar Hoover" and "The Boss: J. Edgar Hoover and the Great American Inquisition", sticks to the facts and uses solid scholarship to dismiss the Summers book as baseless. ... Read more
