Almost ten years after John Frohnmayer was canned as chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, this book means as much or more than itever did. This is not so much an autobiography than it is a manifesto ofhow rabid we should be about protecting out first amendment rights.Itshows the politicization of art, and of free speach, and of how more andmore we are having those rights eroded away in the name of our own safety. Frohnmayer details the struggles that he went through to try to keep theNEA alive when it could very well have fallen apart...he details themistakes he made, and the fight that he fought. It was refreshing to hearthe accounts of someone who believes something strongly, and yet admitscandidly when he made mistakes, and how we can learn from them.Hedescribes how he went into that job as a first amendment moderate, and cameout a first amendment radical. And after reading it (beginning as a firstamendment radical), I came out a first amendment extremist. This is a mustread for anyone who cares a tiny bit for his or her rights in this country. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Another side to the story of Hoover's FBI
For those interested in the history of the Bureau this book is certainly a must read. There is no doubt that DeLoach's professional relationship with Hoover and his first-hand knowledge of some of the major cases the FBI dealth with during his career is worth consideration.
5-0 out of 5 stars Most Accurate Account of the Hoover Years
This book is by far the most accurate account of the Hoover years at the FBI.Mr. DeLoach not only gives the most accurate information on some of the most famous cases, but also gives the reader an inside account of the thinking behind some of Hoover's most important decisions of the time - Mississippi Burning, Monroe, LBJ, Nixon, etc.If you actually want to know the truth and not some plagerous expose with 1/2 truths, take a look at this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fairly obvious
The story being told by the author is fairly obvious (especially to those of us who were adults during much of that time and realized the truth), but it's one that must be told.

This is an excellent collection of documents that show what Hoover was really up to.He is shown to be the master of bureacracy that helped entrench him as FBI director. This book is a must to understand thedirector and his interests.

5-0 out of 5 stars A recommended pick
QUEST FOR TIRBAL ACKNOLWEDGMENT: CALIFORNIA'S HONEY LAKE MAIDUS could've been featured in our 'California' section but is reviewed here because its history is central to Native American circles as a whole, and shouldn't be limited to California-interest readers. A small group of Indians known as the Honey Lake Maidus live in northeast California -but as tribe they remain unrecognized by the federal government. The author is an anthropologist who has worked with them for several years, and QUEST FOR TRIBAL ACKNOWEDGMENT charts their long-lasting battle to obtain such recognition, contrasting their experience with that of other California Indian tribes who have won such federal recognition and who benefit from laws granting them casinos and other exceptions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Armed With Information
This is an excellent peek into the counter-culture movement in the United States. Its a bit dated now, but the basic principles still apply. The main point is how to resist government monitoring and harassment, such as the infamous COINTELPRO operations of the 1960s. The book gives John Q. Public a glimpse into the modus operandi of the average radical group, be it left or right of the political spectrum. It gives great detail on how people can defeat intelligence-gathering and other official interference.
5-0 out of 5 stars Well done and important
Whether you are a social activist or a person interested in hisory and current events this short book is an important read. It's a little known fact that the federal government, when it is not funding terrorists like Osama bin Laden, uses millions of tax payer dollars each year to surveil, harass, and disrupt legitimate First Ammendment activities of groups it disapproves of here in the United States. Glick documents these activities (often referred to as COINTELPRO for the FBI program of the same name) and gives human rights, peace, civil rights and environmental groups (the most frequent targets) an undertanding of how these anti-democratic operations work and how to indentify and counteract them. As one of the founding fathers said: "The price of Liberty is eternal vigilance" and this is an important work in that grand tradition. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Another Christian Lumper
Ms. Crier shows her lack of understanding of the intracacies of Christianity and puts forth a brutish view. For example on page five she refers to it as "Born again Christianity". That may seem like a knitpick on something that isn't a big deal, but it absolutely is a big deal. If you only have a shallow understanding of the person you are talking about, how much of what you say about them is going to be accurate? It's similar to how the majority of Americans of WW2 believed the stereotypes about the Japanese as being the mindless badguys, not that the Japanese were a sophisticated deep thinking people themselves, but there were many wrong assumptions about them that certainly did not help in dealing with them, for example, dropping atomic bombs on them.
5-0 out of 5 stars Important Wake Up Call About The Right Wing Extremists Seeking To Take Over Our Judicial System
In "Contempt" Crier does an outstanding job of exposing the danger being posed by right-wingers, especially the Religious Right, in their attempt to take over the court system in America. She discusses the absurd statements and actions of well known evangelical nut cases such as Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson. But she also talks about lesser known religious extremists who are using their power to influence the political process. For example, James Kennedy, who would like to turn America into a Christian theocracy just as Muslim extremists, in countries like Iran and Saudi Arabia, have created oppressive societies based on Shar'ia law. I believe that our strong American tradition of freedom and civil liberties, based on the Constitution and Bill of Rights, will prevent these religious fanatics from ever taking over. Yet no potential American future is more frightening to me than a so-called "Christian Nation" being run by fundamentalist demagogues.
4-0 out of 5 stars Thought Provoking
After reading this book, I did additional research on many of the organizations and think-tanks mentioned (a real eye-opener, make no mistake).
