5-0 out of 5 stars A Valuable Study of the U.S. Courts of Appeals
During the last several years, important books studying various facets of the U.S. Courts of Appeals have appeared by Cass Sunstein (also reviewed on Amazon) and David E. Klein, to mention just two. This volume, co-authored by three political scientists, is a significant addition to this literature. The Courts of Appeals are so vital because for nearly all federal litigation, they are the ultimate court of decision, as they oversee the district courts. While this book employs statistical models and charts, it is quite digestible by the general reader. This is because the book is written with such clarity of exposition and explanation that its method of analysis and conclusions come through quite nicely. One only wishes that IRS materials could match this level of clarity.

This book is an outstanding reference on Federal firearms laws and assisted in completion of my Master's thesis on gun control. This text is not a position reference for either the pro and anti side of gun control. For convenience purposes, I ordered this revised addition and passed on my previous edition.I highly recommend this book to anyone that needs to research firearms laws or wants familiarity with Federal laws. ... Editorial Review

Prior to 1906, the U.S. Supreme Court had never tried a criminal case--and the high court had yet to assert its power over state criminal courts. That was all to change after the events of a cold January night earlier that year in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Blond, beautiful, 21-year-old Nevada Taylor had hopped on one of Chattanooga's new electric trolleys after work. Before she could reach home, the young woman was waylaid and raped by an unknown assailant. At first Taylor couldn't describe her attacker to town sheriff Joseph Shipp, as she hadn't seen the man clearly, but she soon became convinced he was "a Negro with a soft, kind voice." In just 17 days, a drifter dubbed a "Negro fiend" by the Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read
For one interested in the history of federalism in this country, the book is a must read. The book can be enjoyed by both lawyers and lawmen. If you want to understand how and why the United States Supreme Court became involved in declaring state laws unconstitutional and the need for the Federal Courts to apply the United States Constitution to actions of local officials, this book will enable you to understand those reasons.A true story of unhearald courage by a very determined and brave attorney.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
I ended up reading this book in a little over two days. I was quickly hooked by the fascinating and horrifying story of Ed Johnson, an indigent black man, unjustly accused and convicted by an all-white judicial system that was very typical of the south at the turn of the century. Mr. Johnson's second set of lawyers, two courageous black lawyers, from Chattanooga appeal to the US Supreme Court and set the stage for the most intriguing case to ever be heard before the court. Read the book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Scary moments of our past
When Leroy Phillips, Jr. came to visit my school in Chattanooga, I was overwhelmed by the knowledge that something like this could have happened in my city. After his talk, I decided to read the book for myself. At first, I noticed that the authors took a lot of time to research the subject thoroughly, so much so that I think they know more about Chattanooga than I do, keeping in mind Leroy Phillips does live here. What also impressed me the most was the nonfiction story itself. The story is about a black man named Ed Johnson who was put on trial at first as a scapegoat. However, he eventually was a target for all anti-black aggressions.I mean, for me the 60's were scary, but the brutality and violence of the early 1900's, especially these incidents, are just terrifying. This book will show a detailed look at Chattanooga's past; it will show some historically fascinating law and court decisions, and it will just be an amazing read. ... What if George W. Bush's much ballyhooed "ownership society" were taken to an illogical extreme, so that each of us owned a phrase or a sound or a gesture that would generate a little income every time it was used? Of course, we could trademark all the catchphrases we like (as, for example, Donald Trump has with Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Goodbookonveryimportantissue
Covers similar ground as Brand Name Bullies, by Bollier, as well as the general theses of copyright law jocks Litman, Vaidyanathan, Lessig and others, but with a fresh perspective and many excellent examples of over-reaching IP litigation.Anyone toying with the idea of becoming and intellectual property lawyer, especially a patent attorney, should read this book and consider carefully whether you want to become part of this growing problem.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great humor and informative book
I found this book to be a terrific read that was informative, insightful and filled with humor that enlivened the subject matter. In fact, McLeod's quirky sense of humor and obvious delight in the bizarre/ironic is a big part of what makes "Freedom of Expression" such a page-turner. That, and his personal experience with the subject matter.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Few Holes
In her book, Unorthodox Lawmaking: New Legislative Processes in the U.S. Congress, Barbara Sinclair successfully argues that legislation no longer follows the common "textbook method."Representatives and senators alike have adapted new methods, sending each bill through a different custom-tailored process.Though she leaves a few questions unanswered, Sinclair uses multiple forms of research to paint a clear picture of how legislation is now passed.5-0 out of 5 stars The Ugly Reality of Lawmaking
There exists a profound difference between the legislative process observed on Capitol Hill and the legislative process described in most U.S. Gov't textbooks and Sinclair's work presents a fluid and well written testament to that fact!3-0 out of 5 stars Not light reading
I had to read this book for a course on the Legislative Process. While it is definitely readable, and well-researched, it is expectedly dry. Sinclair describes methods that are becoming more common in getting majorlegislation passed, and shows that this unorthodoxy is not necessarily abad thing. The first half of the book describes the changes that the systemhas undergone, while the second half illustrates how these methods affectedseveral major bills. Examples include a national service bill, regulatoryoverhaul, an omnibus drug bill, and two budgets. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes dated, but always a fun read
Though this book was written close to 40 years ago, and though Rossiter knew nothing about the Kennedy assasination, Watergate, or Vietnam, this book makes bold predictions about the future of our country and ourpresidency with surprising accuracy. The book is written sometimes in aconversation-like tone that makes for easy reading, and the author (whileincredibly knowledgable) makes no effort to talk over the readers head. Itis a bit old though, and the type of analysis Rossiter uses (namely aconstitutionalists point of view) is out-dated. However, it is anoptimistic and inspiring book that every future president should read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece of careful documentation
In the context of recent concerns about spying on Americans by the Executive Branch of government, it is timely to re-read this classic biography. Gentry skips sensationalism and scandal, but his carefully detailed portrait shows a nasty, bigotted old man who happily chiselled his employer.
5-0 out of 5 stars A thoroughly detailed, fascinating, and shocking account of a complex man
A fascinating and comprehensive look at a complex, powerful, and manipulative man.Gentry brings to life the power that Hoover held, power bestowed on him by virtue of the secrets he held in the massive volumes of FBI files he collected over his 48 year tenure.
1-0 out of 5 stars Leave history to historians...
I didn't read the book. I was looking for a serious biography of Hoover, after seeing Oliver Stone's primitive representation of a dark perverted homosexual in "Nixon". I thought : "well, it's 2006, this should be a serious object for research now". Looks like I'm wrong. The cover quotes Newsweek: "Eleanor Roosevelt was right. Hoover's FBI was American's Gestapo." Well, this is appalling. I know that Eleanor was a Gestapo specialist, as I know Newsweek is a well-documented contemporary history magazine. I mean, those are the ones you should trust when you look for information either on Gestapo, or Hoover. It means the FBI/Hoover deported Jews and tortured thousands of people, doesn't it ? Do I get the information right ?I just don't get it: either there's no serious american historians of the 20th american history main characters ; or there is a liberal new order of things on such publications. Maybe there's another possibility, just tell me what's wrong here. Please. ... Read more
