Editorial Review

New York was the primary entry point for most Irish immigrants coming to America, so the history of the Irish in New York is, to some extent, also the history of the Irish in America. And it's safe to say that reading the essays in Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Exhaustive and Significant
I received this book as a gift from a friend who knew I was fascinated with the history of New York City. She was hesitant to give me this gift because she figured I knew just about everything about the history of Irish immigration to New York. She need not have hesitated. This exhaustive and significant collection of essays and excerpts, brilliantly edited by Ronald Bayor and Timothy Meagher, will offer several nuggets of the Irish experience in NYC that that previously had been ignored, overlooked or misinterpreted. 5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting discussion of minorities and refugees
This book is a collection of nine articles that deal with the treatment of minorities in Arab lands in general, and the expulsion of Jews in particular.
5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, detailed, clear and moving
Following the creation of the State of Israel over 800 000 Jews were expelled from Arab lands where they had lived for centuries. Today there are virtually no Jews remaining in Arab lands. The Jews from Arab lands and their descendants constitute nearly 45 percent of the Israeli population. This book, with chapters by various authors, recounts and explains the cruel treatment of non-Muslim minority groups throughout Arab lands historically, the expulsion of the Jews from Arab lands, its implications, and the subsequent resettlement of the majority of these refugees in Israel.
5-0 out of 5 stars The ethnic cleansing of the Jews from the Arab world.
This book tells the disturbing story of the unprovoked expulsion and ethnic cleansing of the Jewish populations from the Arab countries in the Middle East surrounding the re-birth of the State of Israel in 1948.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Review of A Sicilian in East Harlem
I enjoyed Dr.Mondello's new book, A Sicilian in East Harlem, tremendously. The book brought to life people and places new to me, yet strangely familiar.I especially liked the chapters on the family and street life. I savored the descriptions of his grandparents and his life with them. After reading about them I was compelled to begin a search for my own grandparents' birthplaces.A Sicilian in East Harlem is a time capsule of a time and a place that no longer exists.Dr. Mondello has thoughtfully preserved for the reader his unique experience, an interesting and personal piece of history. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Answers to Student Visa FAQ's
As the International Coordinator for my department at a Technical University in Austria, the book was extremely helpful in answering "student visa" related questions for a study abroad semester in the USA.For many Austrian students this book has been a major step forward in trying to figure out the complexities of getting a US student visa.I would like to thank the authors for making my job a whole lot easier.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Overview
Actually, the book is surprising. All of the relevant facts regarding immigration and visa problems are covered! Especially for students who want to spend some months of their study time in the USA, the information is definitively helpful. Currently, I - personally - do not plan to immigrate; but if I will do so in the future, this book will be my first information source!

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy and comprehensive
I found this immigration book easy to use both for reference and sometimes just to read because of the personal way it is written. Most helpful for me was the comprehensive listing of US visas with all the forms requirements laid out clearly.I also read the new Green Card lottery requirements with interest because they have just changed. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great photo book of the history of the Cuban community
This book by one of the authors of Secret Missions, offers a pleasant and often poignant glimpe of the history of Miami's Cuban community. Rather than books of this kind, the author shows his respect for Miami's Cuban community although he does not emphasize the glittering success of its most powerful indivuduals. Rather, the book covers everyone from Peter Pan arrivals to Mariel boat people and rafters. A model study, and illustrated with wonderful cartoons and photographs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Cultural History of the Cuban Factor in Miami-Dade
The Authors Asis and Levine have created an excellent documentary of the Cuban immigration to Miami-Dade county. The book takes one from the 1930s to the present. It explains ins and outs the Cuban life in Miami. It is a very neutral book which neither glorifies nor demeans the Cuban immigration to Miami and Florida. It simply explains the reasons of Cuban behavior which might seem somewhat confusing to a non-Cuban as well as other races and nationalities from Latin America. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent! A great analysis of Cuban-Americans in Miami.
Excellent! This book manages to provide a comprehensive textual documentary of the Cuban exile experience in Miami in an easy-to-read manner. It accomplishes this with its great visual exposition ofphotographs ranging from the early 1900's to the present time, as well as athorough analysis of this group's migration to this country.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Turgid and slow
Researching the history of race relations between Korean Americans and other groups, I purchased this book because of its subject matter.Although it describes some key events in the LA riots of the early '90's, the writing leaves a great deal to be desired and the authors' thesis is not well-argued.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great research tool, pleasure reading
I first read this book as part of research for a paper, but I would recommend it to those who are looking to gain more information about what really happened in the 92 LA riots, from the perspective that was neglectedat the time. ... Read more
