5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, but know in advance....
Excellent book, but know in advance that this book is heavily skewed toward legal topics and lawyer authors. While much of the legal writing is dense for lay readers, it is often well worth the effort. The selections authored by Margaret Montoya, Kevin Johnson, editor Richard Delgado, and non-attorney Gloria Anzaldua were the very best of this remarkably well-written anthology.

5-0 out of 5 stars informative
This book answers a lot of questions about the Latino culture, experience, past, present and future. Some essays tell stories, while others are plain facts. This book has about 670 pages, yet it is a fast and informative read where you can't put the book down.It is organized by section oftopic and gives suggested reading lists at the end of each chapter. A goodintroductory to Latin American studies, historically, culturally, andsociologically. It gives a lot of information for the price, you will notregret buying this book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars ANALYSIS AND REFORMATION
He is doing the work that we pay our elected politicians to do. Ours is not a government by politicians for politicians. Most of them are out of touch with the new reformative spirit of our times; as they will painfully learn rather shortly: that our "government by the people" really is "for the people". His clear analysis is a vital step towards a permanent solution to a permanent threat.
5-0 out of 5 stars Clear and Present Danger
Frosty Wooldridge's book presents well-documented evidence of a clear and present danger to American culture, language, institutions, economy, government and constitution represented by our liberal immigration policies and failures to enforce our borders and penalize illegal aliens and their employers. It is clear that many jobs Americans would do at a fair wage and benefits have been taken over by illegal aliens who are willing to work for substandard wages. There is no way present levels of legal immigration, illegal aliens and their progeny can be accommodated in the U.S. without changing the America we know and love irretrievably forever.
5-0 out of 5 stars Immigration's Unarmed Invasion: Deadly Consequences
The information in this book has been researched with many of the researchers contributing within the chapters.I found this book to be very enlightening.I have been trying to understand where many of the students and families with whom I am working are coming from. It is scary.Having survived the 40's, 50's, 60'+, and now understanding the new wave of immigration, it is disheartening to realize, without the desire to assimilate ( boldly shown on the streets of the city and in the homeroom-classroom) 'No Child left Behind" is an impossible task. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A balanced view of the immigrant experience
I enjoyed this book so much I read it straight thru in one sitting. All 3 portraits had their share of heartbreak but were inspiring in their own way. This is a must read for Indians anywhere in the diaspora (or for any residents of New Jersey for that matter).

2-0 out of 5 stars Articles better than book
I bought this book because I was very impressed with Kalita via her Newsday pieces.Unfortunately, this book doesn't carry the same comparative cultural insight that is a hallmark of her other writing.Read it and if you're going to buy anything, buy the Washington Post.

1-0 out of 5 stars A very ordinary writing..
I was told by a co worker to buy this one to encourage this author. But the content was very ordinary, any DESI (indian who has settled or lives in the united states) will find it ordinary. This does not display the thinking, attitude and the real story of what immigrants go through, perhaps only those who go through this could have helped the author potray the truth. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Concise, Sorely Needed Work
C. Vann Woodward's "The Strange Career of Jim Crow" remains one of the most important books written about post-Reconstruction Southern America. In the space of very few pages, Woodward brings to us the proposal that the assumptions we have all been making about Jim Crow laws and the development of segregation were all wrong from the very beginning. We are taught the lie from grade school forward that "that's just the way it always has been in the South."Not so, according to Woodward.5-0 out of 5 stars Still influential today
C. Vann Woodward's "The Strange Career of Jim Crow" was the first major effort to analyze the segregation system in the American South. Appearing in 1955, the author's treatment of this institution refuted contemporary statements made by several public figures who argued that racial separation was an ancient phenomenon that would last indefinitely. Not so, argued Woodward, as he proceeded to prove that the South experienced a time after the Civil War when the two races often intermingled without widespread hostility on the part of southern whites. Woodward's book expresses the heartfelt belief that since segregation was a recent development, the possibility existed for the South to reject its separatist doctrine and eventually embrace integrationist principles. The first chapters deal with the period during and after Reconstruction, what Woodward refers to as the First Reconstruction, when the South grudgingly accepted conditions forced upon it by the North. The author argues that blacks in southern urban areas often lived side by side with white citizens, as well as rode in the same streetcars and dined in many of the same restaurants. There were exceptions to these incidents, but overall monolithic, legalized segregation measures simply did not exist. 5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating book on a sad aspect of US history and politics
I have the 1957 edition of the book, and so can't comment on the new chapter.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A REAL HISTORY
Civic Ideals is a book every american should read.Prof.Smith has demonstrated clearly how trough history the United States have had diferents meanings about the citizenship. In the case of Puerto Rico-the last colony of the world-we the Puerto Ricans have a second-class citizenship. The author sumarize very well our case with the insular cases and Balzac vs. People of Puerto Rico. Also Smith analize the legal debate in the Harvard Law Review, but do not mention the Yale Law Journal(Adams,Elmer B.,"The Causes and Results of Our War with Spain from a legal Standpoint."VII(1899),pag.119 and Parker,Le Roy,"The Constitution of Porto Rico",X (1901),pag.136.)and Columbia Law Review;Fuller,Paul,"Some Constitutional Questions Suggested by Recent Acquisitions"I(1901),pag.108).For people who want to know the real constitutional history of The United States this book is excellent. Is one of my favorites books.

2-0 out of 5 stars A little dry
This is one of the few books that I have started and then quit part way through.I had to force myself to continue reading after about page 50 and then quit at 200.It was very dry content and read too much like adoctoral dissertation. In addition, assumptions were made about thereaders knowledge of court cases related to civic rights.

1-0 out of 5 stars Shallow book with no real information
I am lawyer from Brazil, and wanted to get real information about the green card application process (without having to go through the dry explanation in the INS website) and was completely disapointed and upset when I received this book.It does not cover anything in depth, and wastes a lot of time talking about temporary visas, fiance visas (I thougt it was supposed to explain about greencards!), special greencards for amerasians (which is not a very common situation)...
4-0 out of 5 stars Shows your options and helps to make decisions
I believe this book may be of interest to many readers. 1-0 out of 5 stars Badly written book
There is an enormous amount of detail in some apparently unimportant topics (for example on how to get a green card for your maid) and very little on very important ones (for example on labor certification). The topic of labor certification is a subsection in the chapter for "Live-In Domestic Workers" !Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb book!!
I read this book while I was doing a research paper on immigrant women and their experiences in America and I was quite impressed by the amount of information it has. Unlike some books on this subject I've read, it has a nice flow to it and it reads well. I really liked the way the author organized it because it follows the immigrant women from the old country to America and very nicely describes their transition into Americans and the struggles they faced while doing this. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in this subject. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars HAVANA USA
Wonderful Text. Helps to rationalize and boost understanding on why Cubans living in Miami have such foreign behaviors in the eyes of the outsider. The author takes you by the hand, and walks you step by step. Absolutely wonderful and did an excellent job at steering clear of any bias.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating and very well-researched book.
Havana USA is a very thorough account of post-revolutionary Cuban migration to America. One of the interesting aspects of Cuban emigration since Castro has been the perspectives given to us by the media and the government - many of them misleading. Garcia dispels these myths with factsbacked up my extensive research and personal interviews. A very interestingread.

4-0 out of 5 stars Liked It, But Didn't Blow Me Away
Not a lot of literature in this area.Clearly written for the non-Cuban audience.Author remains objective throughout.Perhaps a little too objective.Generally, I would recommend it, especially for exiles like mewho may have been away from Miami for much of the period covered by thebook. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Acts of Exclusion and Acts of Resistance
To make the claim that one is willing to dismiss an entire work because it is "hard to read" is to devalue the very concept of WORK that is involved in both the production and the reception of CRITICAL engagements with social, cultural, and political economies. Why must everything be "readily accessible" in order for it to garner praise? And on that note, to make the claim that this is a propagation of the same "ivory tower intellectualism" that is being deconstructed, I would counter that Lisa Lowe's seemingly "incoherent" language has a very "coherent" political function:to constantly question the terms of the "facile" and "easy" when we live in a (post-9/11) society governed by valences of hypervisibilities and transparencies that assault us with a barrage of all-too-accessible misinformations while simultaneously stripping away our civil liberties as citizen-subjects!In this timely context then, Immigrant Acts, now a decade old, presents a still compelling and convincing genealogy that raises multiple and overlapping issues of race, class, ethnicity, immigration, labor, and culture as they pertain to Asian American intersections with the axis of US nation-state and economy. But what makes her work so important is its permeability and fluidity of borders and boundaries:that Asian American racialization delineates a constructive way of critiquing how other groups are racialized and a commentary on the ever shifting, ever changing face of power and oppression throughout American history.

4-0 out of 5 stars Must Read
Anyone with an interest in Asian American history, politics, and culture needs to read this book.A courageous effort to synthesize and contextualize the Asian American experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars academically rigorous, and perhaps not an intro text?
With so many negative reviews of this book, I feel the need to give some context.

1-0 out of 5 stars confused thinking
Here's a book by a quite well-known sociologist that deals with an important topic -- passports in the modern world and other forms of identification. How did they emerge ? What role did they play at different moments after the late eighteenth century ? But instead of providing a good and careful analysis, Torpey's work is full of careless assertions and poor historical analysis. Archives like that of the International Labour Organization are not properly used. Charles Tilly had already pointed many errors out in a review where he notes many mistakes in dealing with France. But the problems go much beyond this. Torpey wants to cast his work in a Marxist or Foucualtist framework, and so does not see that passports can also be means of empowerment. This means that the whole analogy with labor and the expropriation of labor is flawed. Also, if the book is of so-called leftist sociology, why is the whole colonial question so neglected ? In short this is a superficial analysis and a lost opportunity.
