4-0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful academic essays on Jewish Diasporas in China
This is the long-awaited publication of a selection of papers originally delivered at the 1992 Harvard conference on "Jewish Diasporas in China." (While only 19 selections are printed here, drafts of all the papershavebeen deposited and can be consulted at the Harvard-Yenching Library, 2Divinity Ave., Cambridge Mass, 02138).After examining Kaifeng, the workturns to the late 18th, 19th, and early 20th century Jewish experiences inChina with emphasis on Hong Kong, Harbin, and Shanghai. The concludingsection deals with Zionism, the Holocaust, and the Judaic exodus from Chinafollowing the end of World War II. Three very interesting papers, byShirley Berry Isenberg, Barbara C. Johnson and Nathan Katz, compare andcontrast the history of the Kaifeng Jews with that of Jews in India, siteof the one-other, long-lived Jewish Diaspora of Asia. Jonathan Goldstein'shistorical introduction provides a clear and succinct overview of thesubject. A future publication, Volume Two of this work, will be asourcebook and research guide ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Intersting & Convincing Rebuttal to Handlin's "The Uprooted"
John Bodnar's "The Transplanted" is a broad interpretive study of how immigrants in America endured the "swirl of interaction" between economic and societal forces by providing order and stability to their lives.Bodnar begins with an analysis of the situations immigrants faced in their homelands, beginning around the 1830s, and ties these old world experiences with experiences faced in America up to 1930.In large part, Bodnar's study is a reaction to Oscar Handlin's "The Uprooted."In this work, Handlin argued that immigrants were victimized by their transatlantic migration as the institutions they held most dear--property, religion, family, and tradition--were destroyed or rendered irrelevent.Bodnar, however, counters this argument by maintaining that immigrants were not forced to passively abandon their traditions by dominant American influences.Immigrants, in fact, were prepared for their migration from experiences at home and resisted societal, religious, and political pressures when such pressures threatened the economic and social stability in their lives.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb literary analysis
Farah Jasmine Griffin's invaluable book brings together a wide variety of sources -- from novels and poetry to photography and music lyrics -- to illustrate how migration has impacted African-American life and art. Thewriting is smooth and concise, but I particularly enjoyed the way Griffincreates a new vocabulary for discussing urban/rural culturalrepresentations. She also looks at the way gender impacts migrationnarratives, which I found helpful. This work would be extremely helpful toanyone studying African-American literature, particularly Richard Wright,Toni Morrison, or Gloria Naylor as well as blues singers and the artist,Jacob Lawrence. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Not For Everyone, Not As It Seems, Better Than You Think.

2-0 out of 5 stars English is not a toy.
"European vocabularies do not have a silence rich enough to describe the force within Indian contemplation. Only Shakespeare understood that Indians have eyes." (p. 23) And how would Mr. Rodriquez know anything about the force of Indian contemplation? He doesn't allow Americans, among whom he numbers himself, to know much of anything. And what's this about Shakespeare? Didn't he just say something about European vocabularies?
5-0 out of 5 stars The Juicy Apple
Rodriguez sinks his teeth into the juicy apple of race and somehow pulls off enlightening concrete distinctions between the single extant species of Homo sapiens remaining on earth.Essentially (and we allow here for the purposes of discussion some generalities) Rodriguez asserts that Americans/Northern Europeans are divorced psychologically from their historically inseparable neighbors, the Mexicans/Indians, because the Americans/Northern Europeans represent masculine, aggressive, individualistic, Protestant, optimistic, or "comic" values. The passive, Catholic, communal, familial, feminine value systems of the Mexicans/Indians he terms "tragic."(The tragic race, incidentally, is much happier and less medicated, etc., it's so substantially less destructive and selfish.)I grew up in Southern California, lived in Mexico for a few years, and three years ago married a Mexican woman, so I epitomize the fabulous collision of opposite worlds that this book describes (and really helped me to understand).Gorgeously composed, arrogantly honest, and a whole lot more. Intellectually one of the ten most important books of the last two decades. When I admire a book I immediately read it again.I read this one three times. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read and learn about immigration
I'm a college student and was asked to read this book for one of my classes.Going into reading this book, I knew absolutely nothing about the history of immigration, the details of the legislation, or the problems our nation is facing.5-0 out of 5 stars Great introductory book to immigration...
This text is a composition of short essays that lends insight into one of the most controversial issues of today. It provides the framework for a heated debate by arguing various perspectives of immigration. It's a quickread (not dry at all!), informative, interesting and succinct. Highlyrecommended for those who know very little about the controversysurrounding immigration and would like to catch up. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good book, terrible price
This book is made up of essays from a conference.Like all such books some of the essays are better than others. Most in this volume are quite good, with Stephen Perry's especially sticking out as excellent. It's a book worth reading for both lawyers and legal scholars interested in immigration and philosophers and political theorist who want to get a better hand on this neglected and under-theorised area of political and legal philosophy. The only draw back is the outragous price, putting it out of most buyer's range. We can only hope cambridge will eventually see fit to publish a paper-back.Until then, read it in the library. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars A shameful fraud of a book
This book is an example of an anti-intellectual propaganda movement born inside Israel that aims to disprove the existance of palestinians. The idea behind works of this sort is that if the claims of Palestinians to the land they live on can be weakened, unthinkable measures such as mass deportations will become possible.
5-0 out of 5 stars Essential, if you want truth about the Arab-Israeli conflict
This sure is about the dullest book I've ever read. Why then am I giving it so much praise? And a five star rating?Well, read on.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative
Excellent work of dispassionate scholarship

5-0 out of 5 stars Good survey book on Puerto Ricans
A Puerto Rican woman with a Ph.D in Puerto Rican Studies who teaches Puerto Rican studies has written this survey book about Puerto Ricans. At first, this book looked really simplistic, like it could have been called "Get to know Puerto Ricans" or something. However, it turns out that this book is a part of a series to introduce Americans to the new face of immigrants; it's a very-needed, pro-immigrant, anti-xenophobic series.I also wondered why this is such an easy and quick read and then I discovered that the book is written for high school students, though I found it in a university library.Still, this would be a good, quick reference books for any ethnic studies majors at the undergraduate level.Puerto Ricans may find the info here a given and already known, but for non-Puerto Ricans, it will be a great learning, introductory resource. For those who live outside New York and know that Mexican-Americans are the majority Latino group, it will be interesting to read phrases such as "Puerto Ricans and other Latinos" as opposed to "Mexican-Americans and other Latinos."The cover is gorgeous:I want to meet the hot woman and man on the cover more than I want to meet the author! This book celebrates the triracial background of Puerto Ricans being Taino, African, and Spanish. The author breaks the black-white paradigm by not only discussing Puerto Ricans' relationships with those two groups but also with non-Puerto Rican Latinos, Jews, and Asians.I did feel this book was a little scant on the debates about Puerto Rican independence.Still, this was an informative "Who's Who of Puerto Ricans?" text. For example, I never knew Jimmy Smits was Puerto Rican (I had only heard about his father's heritage, Surinamese). Also, the author notes that many famous people that are grouped as African-American are also part-Puerto Rican (Clayton Powell IV, Sammy Davis, etc.).Finally, there's something I like that the author probably didn't intend:I thought this was a great book about a US territory. Most students have to do reports on Nebraska, Delaware, or Wyoming sooner or later. But few Mainlanders realize that the people in Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, and the Virgin Island are our peers. This book will help to overcome this problem.I liked this book and plan on reading more in the series. As a non-Puerto Rican, I learned a lot. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Highland Scots of North Carolina, 1732-1776
This account of the Highlanders and particularly of my ancestor, Alexander McAllister, and the role he played was most informative. I was not familiar with the details of their mid 18th century migration to America. For other researchers, information can also be gained by accessing the web page for Clan McAlister of America.Of course, the name has been spelled different ways, but this is the same Clan. Thanks so much, Duane Meyer, for your research!

5-0 out of 5 stars Background for my family line
This book has excellent information on where my line came from in the Highlands. The description of the economy, the living conditions, the government and clan disharmony, as well as the religion question, all provide a good picture of where our Scots came from and the conditions of their lives. My McRae family came to Carolina in 1774, so this timeline used in this book covered the years preceding, as well as a few following their immigration.I was very interested in the motives for migration. This provided many more than I had previously read about.Because the years led directly into our revolution, it is especially relevant to read this information on the Scots question whether to serve as loyalist or as revolutionary. This proved, as well as disproved several theories which are in print.I appreciate having this book in my reference library. It has more specific descriptive information about the Scots' living conditions both in Scotland and in North Carolina than any other source I have consulted. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Stories about desperate people and the walls that block them
McGill has given us a well laid out, quick introduction to the millions of desperate people who seek, regardless of risk of life or financial cost, to start life over in a 1st world country. He also shows how these very countries are determined not to let them in.
1-0 out of 5 stars An exploitative, poorly researched book
It's a shame that this sort of thing gets published. I've spent years studying unsanctioned migration and take it from me: this book stinks. It is badly written, un-researched, and seemingly un-edited. The title says it all: pure sensationalism. "Hey! Let's exploit human suffering and make Big Bucks in the publishing trade! We got sex! We got slavery! We got it all, folks!"McGill's "investigation" seems to consist mainly of interviews with a very few informants; his reference list in the back consists of a few decent essays on the topic from consumer magazines and then a bunch of trivial articles and websites; it includes virtually none of the really important works on the field. The book ranges from vaguely plausible to complete nonsense: at one point he describes the temperature in the Arizona desert as 130 degrees Celsius (a nice image of cacti boiling over and cars melting into the pavement). All of his information on illegal immigration from Mexico seems to come from one immigrant and one "retired Border Patrol agent." Good lord. Similarly, all his data on coming from China is from one person, padded out with some hearsay about another. I lived on the US-Mexico border for a decade, and I can say that virtually everything he says about the place suggests that he never set foot there (or even looked at it on a map - he has a guy taking Highway 80 from Bisbee to Phoenix, which McGill strangely refers to by the name of its airport, Sky Harbor). While it's fine to get data from individual informants, even a small number of them, a careful journalist does substantial background research and follow-up, which McGill clearly didn't. There are many, many good books on this topic - written by people who care enough about the issue to do legitimate investigation and research - and if you read a few of them, you will realize after about 5 pages of this book that it is a complete sham. Pick up one of the vastly more reliable, carefully researched, well documented books by Suarez-Orozco, Kimberly Grimes, Felix Padilla, Mariam Davidson, Ted Conover, Ruben Martinez, Mike Davis, Alejandro Portes, Ruben Rumbaut, etc. And say NO to McGill's brand of exploitative, sensationalist tripe.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very informative
I would have given this book a higher rating, but I think it suffers from a few serious flaws. As other reviewers have pointed out, the Asian sex trade is very well researched and reported on in detail. It covers all aspects of the sex trade, such as the management/organization, (how it bypasses) the legal framework and of course the customers and the 'sex slaves' themselves.Read more
