Time travel
This is a little box with reproduced artifacts from some of the people who travelled through Ellis Island.It is really clever, because the items look and feel real.There is a book which explains the background of Ellis Island, and then explains the implications of each item in the box.It literally transports the mind into the mind of the person to whom the replica once belonged.

Michelle Malkin's pathetic excuse for journalism is disgusting. Purchasing this racist, biased, terrible thing she calls a book will only feed her to continue. She has posted numerous stories with outright racist remarks and it's gross. Pathetic at the most. Her "blog" online is a prime example of that.

Terrific reading
For someone who has just visited the delta area of Mississippi and actually traversed some of the hollow grounds of the plantations all thru the Clarksdale area, this was accurate,enjoyable and fascinating reading.

An Important Book and Well Written
"The Promised Land" Nicholas Lehmann's account of the black migration from the rural south to the urban north in the early and middle parts of the past century.He gives moving accounts of the thoughts and inside workings of President Johnson's War On Proverty as well as very real accounts of the every day lives of the people who lived within that system.

some good individual chapters; overall weak
Despite some impressive contributors to this edited collection, the overall analysis is intellectually poor and even absurd. The idea that immigration - as a challenge to the state - is more significant thaninternational money flows, trafficked prostitutes or drug trafficking, islaughable. The challenge to the nation state (in this particular area ofresearch) comes not from poor immigrants, but from overpaidpseudo-intellectuals. A religious history of the Scot Irish, not a history of the people
Unless you are really interested in all the petty arguments about religion among the protestant, presbyterians and baptists this book is not for you.Data on the Scots Irish people themselves makes up less than 25% of this book and even then it is more into quoting what this official or that official had to say.You don't really get a feel for what the people were like or why they were the way they were.
Curious
The first question I asked myself prior to reading the book was: "How will this book be different than Leyburn's book on the same subject, written in the 60s?" Not much. Given the number of studies, articles, etc covering this very topic it would have been valuable for griffin to have included a bibliographical essay to outline how his study breaks new ground.Still, Griffin does a thorough job outlining why the Protestant Dissenters left Ulster for the shores of America.However, his title "People With No Name" is curious, as these folks had several names (Ulster Scots, Presbyterians, Scots Irish, Dissenters) all of which Griffin acknowledges.It was also dissapointing to see a dissertation/book once again ignore Catholic migrants to America from Ireland. Catholics in Ireland are only mentioned on 7 of this book's 173 pages. No comparison is made between Griffin's Ulster Scots (or whatever he decides to call them) and their Catholic neighbors who surely underwent the same economic, agricultural, etc. trials in the 18th century.Read more

very important work
This is a great book.Much more thoughtful than most of the more fashionable post-colonial or globalization writers.Ong demonstrates how the Chinese transnational community confounds notions of peripheral non-westerners, or transnational community as weapon of the weak.She also demonstrates how the contemporary world is creating the context for the rise of China.The ultimate antidote to babble about how we have moved into a world beyond identities and geopolitics.

USEFUL BUT.....
i will give this book five stars if only because of it's accuracy in detailing all information. HOWEVER, nobody should spend any more money than they already have (God knows how much money has been paid to get this far!) since ANY and ALL information written on this book can be found at the immigration website, www.uscis.gov.

Nothing new
I read the electronic version of this book in the library. In my opinion, it is nicely presented text, but I found no new information there. It you are familiar with the Guide to Naturalization by The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (available for free from WWW.USCIS.GOV in PDF format), you don't need this book. Questions and answers for Civic test are exactly the same, but in different order. Yes, examples in the book are different from those in the website, but still very obvious and straightforward.

Good Book
I ordered this book on January 2004. I read the review before I ordered it. This book is very useful for me because I wanted to know about the Law, Exam and Interview. It may be useful for new immigrants who've been for 5 years or more. I study this book since January. I went to Boston, MA on March 15th, 2004 for an interview. And guess what, I passed it. I became a U.S. Citizen but, I may have to go to Boston again to get a Naturalization Certificate. Thank this book. ... Read more

Thoughtful, Persuasive Examination of Migrants Across the Globe
Distinguished Stanford University economist Thomas Sowell's "Migrations and Cultures: A World View" is the most thoughtful, articulate examination of immigration across the globe which I've encountered (Though, I might add, that I am not surprised that this book is truly exceptional, given Sowell's keen interest in - and superb scholarship on - this very subject, which I came across for the first time years ago in his earlier book "Ethnic America: A History".). Sowell traces the immigration histories of six Eurasian peoples: Germans, Japanese, Italians, Chinese, Jews and Indians (from the Indian subcontinent, NOT the Americas). He contends that the relative success of these peoples as migrants owes more to their cultural capital (the set of beliefs and practices taken from their ancestral homelands) than to the economic capital of their new countries. It is a compelling argument which he demonstrates repeatedly, tracing the migration patterns of each of these peoples across the globe. Furthermore, it is an argument which is well-reasoned, fully supported by ample data, noting for example, the degree to which Indian migrants from different parts of India have been able to accrue wealth for themselves and their descendants in far-flung regions such as East Africa, Caribbean islands, and the United States (For example, he observes that Guajaratis, migrants from the Indian state of Guajarat, are far more likely to become successful entrepreneurs than those from other Indian states, since Guajarat has had a long history of successful entrepreneurship; in a similar vein, he compares and contrasts the relative economic fortunes of Western European Jews with those from Eastern Europe, noting that the former were more likely to become successful, due to a much stronger entrepreneurial tradition in Western Europe.).
Migrations and Cultures
Dr. Sowell has again done a masterful job of presenting information on the status of minorities, both historically and geographically, which is usually not included in the debate about the situation of the minorities in the United States.His insights are very useful and should be included in every high school and college curriculum.
