5-0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece of scholarship, dense but very extremely well done
I can not say if this is the best book on the subject, because I have not read the other books.I can say that this book is absolutely magnificient scholarship. Its subject is the Irish in America, and it gives a masterful presentation of the history of these people, both in Ireland and in America. This book is not a light read.It is very dense, and rather long. For readers with a serious interest in the subject, however, it is very rewarding to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars How So Many Irish Became American
Emigrants and Exiles:Ireland and the Irish Exodus to North America is a well documented history of the emigration of more than seven million Irish people who left Eire for North America in five time periods from pre-Revolutionary days to 1921.Author Kerby Miller's research included more than 750 sources in both public and privately held collections in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, England, Canada, 20 U.S. states and the District of Columbia as well as more than 5,000 emigrants' letters, memoirs, poems, songs and folklore.5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty thorough look at the Irish Diaspora
An excellent book covering the migration out of Ireland.Miller looks at the different time periods and at the different kinds of immigration, and traces the idea of emigration as "exile."Great background materials are included, as well as good statistical appendices and notes. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Understand U.S. Immigration Law through examples.
The most striking thing about this book is the extensive use of examples throughout the book. One of the main problems in understanding the law is trying to figure out how it applies to your particular situation. The use of examples is one of the best ways for an author to explain the various aspects of any law. In this book, the author did such a fantastic job that I have picked up the book at various times in the last decade to figure out how I can solve my own particular immigration problem and I was able to fix it very fast. He does such a great job that I got carried away by the confidence the book inspires and decided to handle one of the more difficult immigration situations myself. It worked out alright but in hindsight, I should have taken the assistance of a lawyer to make things easier for myself. 5-0 out of 5 stars A must read
This is the best book on this subject available. I am a new citizen to this country, and it would have not happened so easily without this great book. Thank you, Mr. Wernick.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very usefull and well written
This is an excellent book for anyone going through the hurdles of US Immigration. The author covers all bases and still keeps the text easy to read and easy to reference. I have seen Mr. Wernick speak and have read his authoritative newspaper column and this book lives up to his usual high standards. It is the only book of its kind you will need and with the high cost of legal advice, you will save time and money. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Biased Analysis
One of the most comprehensive books on the economic effects of immigration on the native population is "Heaven's Door" by Dr. George Borjas.Dr. Borjas has for decades been trying to prove the adverse effects of immigration on natives.Although his research has continued since 1999, "Heaven's Door" is his most recent major work.

what else is new? This book is like most academic work these days: start with a conclusion, then find supporting arguments.5-0 out of 5 stars Required reading for study of modern immigration debate.
A very sound piece of economic work.Regardless of what you feel about Borjas's conclusions, you must acknowledge the value of his economic analysis. To truly have an understanding of the immigration debate, youmust have read Borjas's work. His contributions to the field areimmeasurable. While I do not always agree with him on the place of"ethnicity" in the realm of immigration policy making, I am moreeducated for even considering his proposal. In sum, I highly recommendthis book to anyone interested in immigration issues--especially thoseinterested in its economic impact. ... This book is an absolute life saver for those trying to muddle through the United State's fiance/spouse visa process. It include step-by-step and line-by-line instructions on all of the forms and tries to answer any questions you might have. It also includes checklists in the back for each visa process.

4-0 out of 5 stars A hard read
First let me begin by saying that this is an interesting read. You basically learn about domestic workers (live in nannies, home cleaners). The author gives you alot of information, in fact I would say that she gives you a plethora of information. As such it took me over a month to finish this book, and the fact.
5-0 out of 5 stars Domestic Labour: Research on the Haves and Have-Little.
In Pierrette Hondagneu-Sotelo's Domstica: Immigrant Workers Cleaning and Caring in the Shadow of Affluence, readers explore, along with the researcher, an oft overlooked element of domestic labour in America. In examining this particular manifestation between the haves and have little, Hondagneu-Sotelo has provided a "scholarly" treatment where Ehrenreich's Nickel and Dimed fell short. This is by no means an indictment of Ehrenreich's work, quite the contrary.Ehrenreich's Nickel and Dimed is approachable by the many levels of readers that seek to understand the phenomenon of the working poor and their interaction with affluent Americans (here, I speak specifically of Ehrenreich's chapter two titled "Scrubbing in Maine").However, in Domstica, Hondagneu-Sotelo has opted to focus her research on immigrant domestic workers, specifically Mexican and Central American women in Los Angeles. In so doing, her research provides insight into the minds and worlds of both parties who engage in what can easily be termed a "love hate" relationship; one where, out of necessity, both the employer and employees are in need of one another. In addition, Domstica serves to highlight some of the struggles of members of America's largest "minority" population (be they documented or otherwise). While Hondagneu-Sotelo relegates her analysis and interviews to women in the Los Angeles area, this reviewer is of the opinion that her research may well be duplicated in other cities with similar populations and yield like outcomes.

3-0 out of 5 stars Questionable scholarship
The second half of the book is clearly superior to the first half. The lack of hard data from prior to and immediately after the Famine seems to lead the author to some curious and questionable conclusions regarding the economic motivation of the Irish women in America. She repeatedly attributes late marriage and spinsterhood to the "traditional" cultural separation of Irish women and men along with the general lack of character of the Irish male. She fails to examine the profound impact of the Famine on women--watching their families and friends starve to death along with forced immigration--and their determination to prevent this from happening again. I found her theories rather determindly sexist.

4-0 out of 5 stars A worthwhile addition to anyone's Irish library
Although at first glance Diner's exhaustive study appears to be fraught with the political correctness and feminist biases that plague so many American academics, in reality _Erin's Daughters_ portrays the story of a gallant group that was able to overcome barriers of poverty, ignorance, and disease to succeed in a New World. The Irish women received no help from the government, from existing charities, or from the Catholic Church, but they were still able to reach the promised land of middle-class America due to their focus on economic goals. The women of Ireland carried their cultural values to America with them, playing a key role in the development of the greatest nation on earth. In order to understand this role, I urge you to read this book. ... Read more

The American educational system is changing through the introduction of immigrant children. These children need teachers and other adults in their lives to stop and hear their voices.Igoa allows these voices to speak loudly to her audience.

Laurence and Vaisse have written a very sane set of analyses of Islam in France. The book is rigorously based on solid data and well conceived historical research. They also support their work with interviews with important participants in the processes they describe.Absolutely every one interested in the integration of Islam into Europe would do well to read this fine work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reframing immigration history
Mae Ngai's ambitious book compels historians and general readers alike to critically reassess traditional understandings of and approaches to U.S. immigration.Much of the histories on U.S. immigration and immigration policies have told a similar tale. The United States, the narrative goes, has been tainted by a long history of exclusion, a blight on the nation's democratic tradition that was only recently removed with the passage of the Immigration Act of 1965.Such a narrative not only reaffirms the myth of American universalism, but also consistently fails to produce any new critical knowledge about U.S. immigration and U.S. history.Impossible Subjects differs from these other works of immigration history in this important respect: it proceeds with the conviction that the United States was never a "nation of immigrants."
4-0 out of 5 stars The legally constructed "illegal aliens"
IMPOSSIBLE SUBJECTS, written by Mae Ngai, is the best of recent books on the 20th-century American history of immigration. She reveals that the problem of "illegal immigrants," which has been regarded as one of the most serious problems since the late 20th century, is indeed a legal construction. According to the author, immigrants from Mexico were drawn into the U.S. Southeast because the Southeast political economy, especially agri-business, raised need for the massive wave of low-wage immigrant workers and at the same time defined them as the racially "foreign" people who were rendered alien to America, which was defined as the nation of Caucasians. What enabled the American Government and people to attach racialized foreignness to the Mexican immigrants (and, inevitably, American citizens of Mexican origin) were Immigration Acts, border policing, and discriminatory control of visas.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Four Themes in Anglo-American Culture
Albion's Seed by Brandeis University History Professor David Hackett Fischer is the history of the four main regional migrations from Britain to North America in the 17th and 18th centuries. Professor Fischer examines each of these four migrations in great detail, describing the origin, motivations, religion, timing, and numerous cultural attitudes or folkways for dealing with everyday life, including birth, child rearing, marriage, age, death, order, speech, architecture, dress, food, wealth, and time, to cite only a few. He devotes special attention to the different concepts of liberty and freedom held by each of these four British cultural groups.

1-0 out of 5 stars Scottish people don't refer to themselves as "Scotch"
Scots, maybe, but usually just plain Scottish. Scotch is a common name for whisky. It amazes me how many people here tell me that they are "Scotch-Irish" - to me it makes them sound like an idiot.
5-0 out of 5 stars "For They Desired a Better Country"-Hebrews 11:16
This is the first book I've read about the Scotch Irish and seems to be the accepted standard on the subject. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Aztec history lovers, this is for you
I learned more about the Mexica worldview from living with eight Mexican families, through this book, than from all the old codices combined. The little precolumbian homilies children got in Tenochtitlan--little rules for living that created respectful, self-respecting children--they go by a different name but remain unchanged! Here in California half of all children are born to Mexican parents. The Catholic/Aztecan patriarchy does not mix with the go-it-alone Yankee work-ethic, period. For example: To move away from your family for a better-paying job is to fail miserably. What are material possessions if your children's grandparents are so far away?
3-0 out of 5 stars This is not the entire picture
The person that reviewed this book so far cannot understand, maybe empathize, what the parents of these children endure in a society that is dominated by the notion of "whiteness".The only parents talked about, are those immigrants who speak Spanish and are often the target of repeated injustices. As an educator, most parents are like the parents discussed in the book.Of course, the differences like language, culture, and the history of different populations and what those implications entail, are very critical factors to consider. The previous review is a helpful one because it reaffirms what people still believe and continue to do-blaming "others," the victims, for why they and generations after them are still not doing well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Educating Parents
Finally! Finally we have an ethnographer who is able, or maybe just willing, to research the heart of the matter. Why do immigrant children have problems assimilating; why are they less likely to go to class; whyare they less likely to graduate; why do they feel marginalized?GuadalupeValdes attempts to answer these questions in her book Con Respeto byinterviewing and observing the lives of ten mexican-american families. Similar ethnographies have focused on the school environment --- what arethese immigrant children experiencing at school that would cause them to bemarginalized the way they are?Valdes, who still looks at the schoolenvironment, spends the majority of her time examining the families of theimmigrant students, and what their home life consists of.This deeperexamination proves very fruitful by clearing up possible misconceptions onecould have walked away with after reading books like Jocks and Burnouts,Gender Play, and Made in America. Are the parents responsible for thetriumphs, and in many cases, the failures of their children in school? Valdes would say, yes, but only partially. The schools, Valdes feels, could still do more, or at least communicate more effectively with theparents.
