5-0 out of 5 stars Crossing the BLVD: Strangers, Neighbors. Aliens in a New America
Book is an excellent companion to a travelling show we saw at the University of Maine in Orono. It captures in an extraordinary fashion the incredible ethnic and cultural diversity within a relatively small section of Queens, NY.

5-0 out of 5 stars Colorful and heartfelt tribute to a diverse population.
Queens, in New York City, is the most ethnically diverse community in the country. Over a period of three years, from 1999 to 2002, editors Warren Lehrer and Judith Sloan collected stories from a sampling of the borough's 2 million residents. The result is this book, a much needed tribute to the people, most of them immigrants, who make Queens such a culturally rich locale.
5-0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC!
Well done and Bravo for Warren Lehrer and Judith Sloan for this formidable effort! I couldn't put this book down, not so much because the book has stories of gore or thrill, but because of the beautiful and thoughtful way in which it is crafted, laid out and presented. The subjects are treated with complete dignity, affirmation and love, something that is rarely seen when dealing with immigrants and foreigners. I applaud this multi-media venture [the accompanying CD and website are mindblowing as well] and the amount of effort it took. I put down the book feeling like I had had the best world education lesson ever-if only high school were like this I'd be so much further in life! Bravo! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars diatribe
Erika Lee is a very angry woman. Her diatribe on American immigration policy equates anyone who is concerned about porous borders , the enforcement of laws in a nation of laws, and containment of disease as being a racist. It's hardly fair. And it detracts from her history of immigration legislation and enforcement. Yes, the Chinese Exclusion Act was reprehensible. Yes, we were and are a nation filled with racial prejudices and hatreds.

4-0 out of 5 stars An interesting academic work
The premise of Driven into Paradise involves the forced exodus of so many European classical musicians. Each of the essays in this book deals with this theme, albeit in a rather academic and dull manner. Thus I would not recommend it as light reading. By contrast, is a serious musicological work that analyzes a unique cultural phenomena associated with the Holocaust; namely, what was the effect of this musical exodus not only on the United States but on Europe as well?Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and Surprising
Interspersed with immigration tables, maps and personal vignettes, statistics models and modernist poetry, Between Two Nations is more than an exploration of immigration, marginality and political identity in the City; it approaches sociopolitical art.Capturing trial and tribulation, the melee of irrationality, self-interest and calculation in our polity, the faces and the thrum of humanity, one cannot help but wonder: who is Michael Jones-Correa?

4-0 out of 5 stars Deconstructing the histriocity of cosmopolitan
Clifford looks at culture in transition, identity construction in motion and the relationship between transnational movements of people and transnational conceptions of identity. This perspective of culture on the move is particularly important to understanding the rapid dynamics of culture, culture clash, cognitive dissonance and social re-embedding taking place in relationship to mass mediated electronic representations.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Anthropology for Postmodern Times
I really had a hard time conceptualizing my own ethnographic research in sociology concerning a non-federally recognized Native American community in South Carolina (now a book: Native Americans in the Carolina Borderlands: A Critical Ethnography, Carolinas Press, 2000). The lights came on after reading the Predicament of Cultures by Clifford. His theme of "Borderlands" is so central to the experience of many cultures around the globe--including our own! To understand how people occupy and contend with borderzones between races, classes, cultures, and histories, turn to Clifford's work. His work is essential for the social analyst because we, all of us, are increasingly living within borderlands and, thus, the need for new conceptualizations of the nature of the social/cultural. Clifford is one of the leading figures within the growing movement toward new, critical, and alternative forms of ethnography. Routes is about travel and how we might conceptualize culture when it is "put into motion." A must-read for all ethnographers, as well as those concerned with postmodernity and postcolonialism.

5-0 out of 5 stars Roots/routes of transnational belonging explored.
The roote/routes of transnational (as well as local) belonging are explored in all their full global/local complexity and poetics.Probing and interesting at many points.I use one of the poems/essays/travelogues,"Honolulu: The Year of the Ram" in my course on the literaturesof Hawai'i, as it gives a tourist view of Hawaii and moves way beyond thatin its critique of US militarism and the arrogant masculinist gaze of"anthropology."Clifford is, for me, a kind of global and localpoet of the postcolonial condition, an honest and caring soul in the muck. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read on immigration
If you don't think 400 million people living in the US by the year 2050 are too many, then I guess you don't have to read this book. But if, like me, you are tired of gridlock, crowded everything, degraded schools, unpaid hospital bills, crime, etc., to say nothing of the loss of civic duty and responsibility, then Graham's book explains how we got here.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Corrective
InUnguarded GatesProfessor Graham provides a much needed corrective to what passes as the history of immigration restrictions from the 1880s to the present. Any suggestion in the current debate that perhaps the lifeboat of immigration is nearing capacity is sure to be greeted by a reminder thatthe Statue of Liberty stands as a permanent testament to our historic invitation to the world's "huddled masses yearning to be free." 5-0 out of 5 stars A new look at immigration history.
This is a very interesting book, particularly on the early restrictionists. It gave me a new perspective on why Americans restricted immigration in the early 20th century, and gave me historical insight into today's immigration policy crisis. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The Deconstructionist Left Deconstructs America Today
It's sad that the mainstream media portrays the new book "The Good Citizen" as a "collection of essays by the best minds in the nation", when the editor, a San Francisco prof, has obviously screenedout any writers with traditional views of anything American.Even a pieceby the foreign-born "person of color" Dinesh D'Souza would havegiven this book "something of value". The composite mind here canbe summarized rather easily."We" are now ready to move beyondindividual rights and move on to: "social rights", in which"society" (i.e., government) guarantees a certain standard ofliving for everyone; and "cultural rights", in which everyself-identified minority group has a "right" to attempt toconstantly increase their power and influence. Of course, it is"unthinkable" that the successul majority, would ever have theright to say that they did not wish to subsidize the remnants of societythrough tax payments to a so-called "acceptable" standard ofliving. Nor does the U.S. majority, which still happens to be white,Christian, and heterosexual, have the same rights as self-identifiedminority groups to attempt to constantly increase THEIR own power andinfluence. If you already believe this kind of deconstructionist fallacy, you will be supported in exactly what you already think. As forthe rest of us, don't waste your time.
