5-0 out of 5 stars Long on ideas
Why did it take me eight months to finish a book that is such an easy read? Any journalism student could breeze through Covering Violence in a day or so. Yet on many days I found myself reading a page -- or less -- and then setting the book aside. I thought that I was remiss until by chance I talked to two other people who were also reading this book at the same time -- and discovered that they were also plodding through it at a snail's pace. Why? On reflection, I realized that I had been stopping to think. Each paragraph prompted a flood of ideas that demanded contemplation. It forced me to ponder the choices that journalists must make, how their news gathering practises and ensuing coverage affects the people whom they cover -- and how covering grisly stories affects journalists themselves. Read-pause-think: It was reassuring to learn that I was not alone in having the book produce this response in me. I now know what took me so long. I still marvel that it took so long for reporters, as a group, to examine the obvious, lingering and sometimes profound impact of their craft upon individuals, and formulate a code of practise. Covering Violence is an excellent way to start. It will interest seasoned journalists and should be required reading for all journalism students. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Riviting Story
If ever there were a story of ultimate courage in modern-day life, this is it. Steven Sharp lost both his arms in a farming accident when he was just a teenager, and years later he sued the Case farm equipment company and won. It was an accident that should not have happened. Steven was very careful about safety while doing farm work. The machine with which he was bailing hay suddenly started up and both of his hands were pulled in. He managed to sever both of his arms in one of the most courageous acts that one can imagine, then he walked back to a farm house for help. The agony is difficult to imagine. This is a story not just about Steven, but also about a company which deserved to be sued.Steven moved on with his life without feeling sorry for himself. This is a true story of bravery written by William Mishler, who died in December, 2002 following a brief illness. It's sad that Mishler could not have lived to write more stories of real life events.I can't say enough about the pleasure I got from reading this book. The pleasure came from knowing that there are still good people in this world such as Steven Sharp.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Young Man's Courage
This is an extraordinary narrative in its subject matter and in its writing. As the author, William Mishler, says, it is "a contemporary American story well worth telling, " and he relates this true drama with a sympathy and an energy that do full justice to the enduring courage and resilience of its hero. We are carried along vividly from a quiet, small town in Oregon to a contentious courtroom in Wisconsin, where a dramatic trial takes place. Steven Sharp lives in aptly named Eagle Valley in Eastern Oregon, where the rhythms of country life and hunting and fishing form his character and his destiny. He suffers a horrendous accident with a defective tractor and baler, in which he loses both arms in an attempt to clear some hay from the baler. His agony is described in stark detail as he desperately yet deliberately uses razor-sharp metal in the machine to sever both arms that are being mercilessly pulled into the baler; he then finds the courage to cauterize the stumps on one of the red-hot rollers. Steven tells his story to the author and in the courtroom with a calm and modest conviction that he did what had to be done to save his life and his sanity. He earns our immense admiration and empathy for this act of bravery and for his persistence in helping his team of lawyers bring a successful lawsuit against the Case Corporation of Wisconsin. Case brought all their wealth and power in an attempt to deny Steven his due, but owing to a committed team of Minneapolis lawyers and Steven's and his family's perseverance, Case lost in court and in subsequent appeals. A note at the end of the book indicates that three years after the final verdict, Case has done absolutely nothing to warn their customers of the life-threatening dangers of their machine. William Mishler, a fine poet and writer, becomes deeply involved in the human and legal aspects of the drama, which he describes with a superb attention to detail in an intensely absorbing narrative of great imaginative power ... Editorial Review

Ruthann Robson's canny, well-written essays on lesbian legal theory and pedagogy, rooted in her experience as a lesbian professor at a progressive law school, offer a sparkling application of poststructural analysis, queer theory, and cautious, common-sense feminism to a wide range of legal problems and possibilities. She begins by imagining Sappho as a modern-day law student, with the hope of uncovering Sapphic rather than Socratic methodologies in legal theory: "How could [invoking Sappho] change the ways in which we understand, practice, and apply law? What if we adopted the Sapphic lyric as a mode of communication and understanding rather than Socratic argumentation?"Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A unique look at lesbians in the law
Robson is an openly lesbian, politically progressive law professor.(In later articles, she has come out as a cancer victim as well.)This is a collection of her essays on lesbians, homosexuality and the law. This book has a great introduction.Robson is a complex thinker, so do not assume this book will just say, "Aren't lesbian lawyers cool!?"Robson's analysis of legal issues can be overly pessimistic at times:as if one domestic partner law or pro-gay legal decision can be criticized for not removing all oppressions throughout the world!Still, this was an interesting read.It differs from many gay legal texts. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful andinciting
Professor Subotnik gives a very sane and thoroughly researched discourse on the current trend in race and gender relations. Have women and minorities parlayed their victimization into a status that allows them to discriminate, victimize, badmouth, and even worse with impunity? Does past victimization require retribution in perpetuity? These are some of the questions he addresses with wit, humor, and the odd French or Latin phrase. Occasionally the book borders on intellectual elitism, but this can be forgiven ason the whole it is quite accessible and altogether a good read. This is not a book for those who shun "politically incorrect" speech or who still believe that past victimization legitimizes reverse discrimination and worse. It is a book for all those looking to gain some insight into the whys and hows of race realtions today and some of the steps that can be taken to help swing the pendulum back to center.

4-0 out of 5 stars Looking on the bright side
The thoroughness with which Prof. Subotnik explores the multiple (and often self contradictory) facets of the race-&-gender-critic arguments, and questions the motives of those who put them forward, is impressive. His method of presenting counter-arguments by quoting third parties with impeccable race-&-gender credentials neatly deflects the standard "don't listen to him, he's just a typical white / male racist / chauvinist" response. And the humour which runs merrily throughout the text helps clarify the issues he raises, as well as making the book highly readable.

Daniel Petrocelli is the attorney who represented Fred Goldman and his family in their civil suit against O.J. Simpson for the death of their son Ron. (As such, he also coordinated the simultaneous prosecution of suits brought by Ron Goldman's biological mother and by the estate of Simpson's ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson.) In Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Preponderance of Evidence
"Triumph of Justice" is probably the best account by an "insider" of the Simpson legal and criminal saga.Civil attorney Daniel Petrocelli was hired by the Goldman family to represent them and bring justice for their son and brother, Ron and he takes the reader along on his first meeting with the Goldmans, to sharing memories of Ron, the tragedy of his life being cut so short, and the depositions and half-truths given by Simpson.Parts of the civil trial may be a bit heavy handed for the more impatient, but getting an inside glimpse of the civil trial, which received far less media attention that its criminal counterpart (not to mention, a firmer no-nonsense judge who would not allow cameras in his courtroom, nor any media pandering)is worthwhile.Far from being shown as a charasmatic, personable former athlete, Simpson comes across as a smarmy, cocky, self-absorbed guilty individual. His civil trial attorneys seemed, at least thru "Triumph", overwhelmed with the enormity of their client and the many half-truths and blatant lies he told.By comparison, Petrocelli steamrolled both them and Simpson and finishing the book, you come away with a deep sense of regret that Petrocelli couldn't have represented the State in the criminal matter.
5-0 out of 5 stars outstanding
The definitive book on the Simpson case.Daniel Petrocelli and his fellow lawyers brilliantly dissected and debunked every myth about the Simpson case.I found the book very entertaining and well written and an excellent primer on how to do direct and cross examination of a witness.
2-0 out of 5 stars Boring and incompetent writing
Petrocelli (and/or his ghost writer) have put together a book that is replete with incorrect use of the language in terms of tenses and punctuation marks, and the writing style is without any real sense of flow. I found this effort tedious and poorly organized, certainly not worthy of an attorney of his stature -- unless it was written soley for the money that nearly any book about O.J. Simpson can produce. ... Read more
