4-0 out of 5 stars A very useful book - whether you go to law school or not
I was seriously considering applying to the law school last summer, and this book was one of those that I purchased to read along with LSAT prep books. The book had specific cases lined up in order from easy ones to more complicated, and it hasquestions of the end of each chapter, so that you can test yourself and your udnerstanding of material and how it applies in the courtroom. Also, I liked the sense of humor of the author; it was very encoureging in the beginning, and then kept peeking throught the book.
1-0 out of 5 stars Buy this if you want to waste your time
All of the E&E books I have read, especially this one, are disappointing. I guess they can be helpful if you haven't been attending class and need to learn the material for the first time. But I'm not sure why a student who has kept up in class would waste time with such a vague and introductory study guide. I recommend a more advanced, detailed and concise study guide. Also, the Q&As at the end of the chapters are too verbose for what they cover. Most of the answers are pages long, when they should be at most a few paragraphs, if not a few sentences.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you are struggling in Civil Procedure, buy this book.
Personally, I found Civil Procedure was the most difficult class in my first year of law school.I purchases several secondary sources but none were as helpful as Glannon's book.Glannon's book teaches by taking its reader through series of exercises that start with the basics then build into complex problems. Each problem comes with well written, complete, and comprehendible answers. The book uses helpful diagrams for explaining confusing topics such as the sometimes-confusing relationship between subject matter jurisdiction, person jurisdiction, and venue. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars No Surprises Here
Adkisson and Riser are beacons in the darkness that is labeled asset protection. This book, and the attitudes it sets forth towards asset protection (when that term may be discretely used) are the de facto standard of care and woe be to the professional who believes otherwise. I say there are no surprises because the book is the embodiment of the professional, real life anti-scam viewpoint in this area Jay Adkisson has come to represent. Do not ignore the fact most of these five star reviews are by attorneys like myself who see the aftermath of so-called asset protection, off-shore entities and third world trusts. Don't miss it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must read"!!
I have practiced estate planning, with an emphasis on asset protection planning, for many years. This book's explanation of various asset protection techniques, many of which I have used in my own practice, is both lucid and thorough. Not only will experienced practitioners find the book to be an invaluable source, but beginners too will discover a text that is highly readable and easy to understand. I am confident saying that Asset Protection spans "the universe" of such techniques, with both analysis of the fundamental "building blocks" of the area and coverage of more advanced methodologies. Apart from its useful content, I also found the format of Asset Protection to be particularly straightforward, starting with its discussion of the basic concepts of asset protection and its goals, as well as ethical considerations, proceeding to cover many trusts currently being employed in sophisticated estate planning, and ending with a thorough discussion of entities that should play a part in many sophisticated estate plans. In sum, for beginner and practitioner alike, this book is a "must read"!!
5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible for "Legitimate" Asset Protection Techniques
As a business lawyer, I regularly review asset protection resources so I can better represent my clients - many of whom develop high net-worths through high risk activities (e.g., physicians, "aggressive" entrepreneurs).Until reading this particular book, all of the resources have typically fallen into one of two categories: (1) materials proposing techniques that sound too good to be true and, based on recent legal decisions, have been proven to be too good to be true, and (2) materials that simply discuss the absolute basics of asset protection planning.

Very deep and incisive

4-0 out of 5 stars listen! It's wonderful
I listened to the audio book, which is long but wonderful!Once you get through the book you will have learned several very valuable lessons.Mr. Spence provides several approaches for winning your case and learing how to be genuine and convincing. He advocates an emotional and honest investment in your situation and he tells you exactly how to do it.It works, and although many of his cases give court room stories, anyone can apply it to their own life outside the court room.We often interrogate others while being interrogated in life.Check it out!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book That Transfers Raw Emotion
Gerry Spence has a rather eloquent way of describing what is charisma: "Charisma is the controlled transfer of raw emotion."

4-0 out of 5 stars Good material---but Outdated
The title of my review says it all: the text and the study guide were fine at the time they were published in 1996, but this is 2004 and a great deal has changed in California's court system from the vantage of civil procedure. The publisher should have updated this book no later than 2000 when the courts were administratively unified; additionally, local and state rules of procedure have been dramatically altered to place greater emphasis on ADR (alternative dispute resolution) and the rules regarding Fast-track litigation have likewise undergone significant changes.5-0 out of 5 stars Next best thing to the law library
I bought this book in preference over several other self help law books I examined after I fired my lawyer and went in pro per. Lots of really helpful, accessible, thorough, and friendly information. In fact it was sogood that I promised myself I would write its first online review. Youwon't get much help on how to act in court, though, as only attorneys cando that and not paralegals, who it was written for. But don't listen to meI'm not an attorney. My lesson in all of this was to stay out of court inthe first place. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An informative reference guide to the complex laws and regulations concerning neighborly disputes and intricacies
The newly expanded and updated fifth edition of Neighbor Law: Fences, Trees, Boundaries, And Noise by attorney and mediator Cora Jordan is an informed and informative reference guide to the complex laws and regulations concerning neighborly disputes and intricacies. Deftly covering laws concerning such issues as water runoff and flooding, trees that hang over property line, problems with neighboring businesses, noisy neighbors, unclear boundary lines, blocked views, high or unsightly "spite" fences, dangerously deteriorating fences, dangers to children, and so much more, Neighbor Law is a complete and thorough compendium ideal for non-specialist general readers wanting to know (and be able to enforce) their rights as a property owner in a neighborhood of property owners. Neighbor Law is very strongly recommended for anyone searching for a "user friendly" informational documentation of all the rules and regulations concerning proper neighbor responsibilities and an understanding of what can and can not be lawfully done when a conflict arises between neighbors.

2-0 out of 5 stars In Love With His Own Words ...
This is a tough book to critique b/c my law school recommended it.The author writes a well organized book, but every chapter has been padded -- chapters that could have been concisely written in 20 pages drag out to sixty.Buy this book only if you have to and read it only if you must. You aren't going to learn anything definitive from these chapters and all the practicing lawyers I run into think the authors ideas are just plain silly. The best way to teach about trial advocacy is to include REAL transcripts from REAL cases, not made up stories about fire trucks and people late for work. Those work great -- on paper.Plus the book never answers the big question -- what is the author's ACTUAL TRIAL EXPERIENCE?

Modern Trial Advocacy: Analysis and Practice: Third Edition5-0 out of 5 stars A Litigation Essential
I bought this book after reading another review stating how superior it was to Mauet's "Trial Techniques."The review was correct. This book can assist the new litigator or can help polish the style of an experienced one.I recently had the opportunity to attend a NITA Trial School and see the techniques in the book in action. You are not serious about litigating well unless you have this book in your library. The book is practical and exceptionally informative. ... Editorial Review

In America, when somebody does you wrong, you take 'em to court. W. R. Grace and Beatrice Foods had been dumping a cancer-causing industrial solvent into the water table of Woburn, Massachusetts, for years; in 1981, the families of eight leukemia victims sued. However, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Synchronicity???
Is this book, a worthwhile read, an attempt to close the book on shady goings-on in Woburn of the 1960s?Were some children in this case treated for leukemia using cutting edge techniques of the day, such as bone marrow transplants, and some of those children survived only to be tormented because of their unexpected survival?
4-0 out of 5 stars Just a an ending, not a beginning!
This is a necessary book which does a public service by highlighting the repercussions of poor environmental stewardship. It does not, however, indicate the extent of a broader mystery behind the events in Woburn and Middlesex county itself, respectively.
5-0 out of 5 stars An inside track on the legal process

1-0 out of 5 stars A Farrago of Foolishness
There is not a chapter in this book - indeed, if you omit the index, it would hard to find a five-page stretch - that does not swarm with errors and absurdities. And what is notable is that the errors cannot be classed among those that even the well-informed are liable to make from time to time. They are not mere slips of the pen, they are not minor or superficial, nor of the kind that can simply be skipped over because they play little role in the argument that is being developed. No, they are everywhere manifestations of confusion and ignorance.Posner's merry obliviousness to even the simplest facts about literary interpretation and history is in itself remarkable enough, but what is truly extraordinary is the recklessness with which he parades his ignorance for all to see.1-0 out of 5 stars tiresome and ignorant
The problem is simply that Posner knows very little about literature andliterary history. Thus he is given to fatuous efforts such as hisspeculations on why Shakespeare did not publish his collected plays whenthe fact is that in the early 17th century, playwrights made very littlefrom publishing their writings, and hardly anyone bothered to publish theircollected works.(When Ben Jonson did in 1616, he was widely ridiculed.) Posner's book is riddled with egregious misstatements of this sort, whichwould be comcial to anyone with the most basic education in literaryhistory. In attempting to draw legal conclusions based on faultyinformation of this sort, he only creates further confusion.

4-0 out of 5 stars No deconstructionist twaddle- Rather, illuminating insights
Justice Posner is one of the more wondrous polymaths of his generation.Law and Literature, although not the greater of his achievements, is a thoughtful opus, full of illuminating insights.I read his book 6 or 7years ago but I remember how impressed I was by the sharpness of hisanalysis of the legal implications of Kafka's Trial and Melville's BillyBudd.I have been roused to giving my opinion because all the othercommentators are so uniformly negative about the book.Clearly, eitherthey are missing something, or I am wide off the mark.I proposeit's theformer, and recommend "Law and Literature" to anyone who wants toknow how one of the heights of contemporary legal thought tackles many ofthe issues that have occupied anyone who knows the law and enjoysliterature. The fact that Posner doesn't indulge in deconstructionisttwaddle is no reason to abstain. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Car Accident Victims
I bought this book after two big-name lawyers refused to take my case and a third one offered to help me in a small claims court for a third of the final settlement amount. Since the max reward in a CA sall claims court is $5,000, after a third was taken out, I would hardly be able to pay off all my medical bills. But after reading this book and following its instructions on how to collect evidence and how to write a demand letter, I was able to settle my own claim for $4,750.00.

If you want to make less mistakes, save time and money, it's best to start with this book so you can get the correct service, venue, and evidence organized to file and win. I found the chapter on how to write a demand letter and settle your claim before it gets to court very helpful. They even offer sample letters you use to settle your case. Nolo Press seems to put together the best legal self help books.

If you have a claim involving $5,000 or less, you can easily and inexpensively bring an action in Small Claims Court. But even though Small Claims Court is designed for non-attorneys (in fact, attorneys are not allowed) you still must have a basic understanding of the rules of evidence and know how to put on your case. This book is wildly overpriced for the quantity and quality of information it has.In fact, the book offers little that you can't get from much cheaper sources.I suggest "Winning Your Personal Injury Claim"or even "How to Start and Build a Law Practice."Questions:tkbaird@prontomail.com. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A great read for both lawyers and lay people
Dershowitz is a great writer.Love him or hate him, you can't deny this man's writing ability. His style is relatively informal, avoiding overly-intelectual language and instead opting to use plain language. This style allows the reader to focus on the content and ideas behind text, rather than constantly look words up in the dictionary. In this book, Dershowitz retells some of the more gripping cases he's been involved in.The book is partly crime novel, taking the reader thru the case step by step. The book is partly theoretical, using the cases to instruct on the way the legal system should or does work.I recommend the book highly for the law student, lawyer, and lay person as it will instruct you to how the criminal justice system really is.

4-0 out of 5 stars engaging, insightful, personal, educational
this book succeeds on many levels and as such should appeal to many readers:5-0 out of 5 stars A great blend of stories and information
Although this book was written almost 20 years ago, the constitutional issues briught forth are timeless.I may not agree with his politics, but I can now understand how Dershowitz can sway a jury.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best in the field of negotiation
Charles B. Craver is the Freda H. Alverson Professor of Law at the George Washington University Law School and a frequent contributor to The Negotiator Magazine. Professor Craver has taught courses in Legal Negotiating at several Law Schools over many years. Additionally, lawyers will know him for his continuing legal education courses on the negotiation process and alternative dispute resolution and well as for his many books and articles on labor relations, alternative dispute resolution and negotiation. He is, therefore, a true expert in negotiation.
