5-0 out of 5 stars A great resource for law students
This casebook is yet another testament to the genius of Prof. Jonathan Baker, a true guru of antitrust law.The book provides a detailed and comprehensive overview of the relevant concepts, tying them together with case studies. It is a great resource for law school students wishing to gain a solid understanding of antitrust concepts and analysis, also providing them with historical background, underlying economic theories, and policy perspectives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Antitrust Law in Perspective...accurate title!
After two years in law school, it is refreshing to use such a well-organized, comprehensive casebook.I have the additional pleasure of learning the subject from one of the authors.Professor Gavil conveys the same passion and clarity for the subject in the classroom as he does in this book.Definitely a great investment, and I would even suggest as a study aid to those law students unfortunate enough to be using another casebook!Good luck in law school. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Winners, Losers, and Microsoft
This book presents a compelling discussion of economic theory and offers scrutiny of several flawed theories of market failure with specific regard to Microsoft and the government's antitrust case against the software giant.Winners, Losers, and Microsoft gives noteworthy insight into the underlying assumptions of these deficient economic theories as well as into the perceptions used as their foundation of evidence.Leibowitz and Margolis point out crucial flaws in these theories which are widely used today by some economists. They also seek to destroy the government's evidence for Microsoft exhibiting a damaging monopoly role in the software industry. The authors' assertion is that markets cannot be oversimplified through questionable assumptions and faulty evidence in order to come to a convincing theory of market failure.Their main claim is simply that certain technologies win out over others in time because they are of superior quality.
1-0 out of 5 stars Dvorak isn't a myth.
It's true that no completely scientific studies have been done on Dvorak vs Qwerty, but it hardly takes a study to see that Dvorak is better.Qwerty was created before touch typing was ever dreamed of.It's no better than an alphabetic arraingement.2-0 out of 5 stars Authors do not know the computer industry
The authors are PH.D. economists, but obviously do not know how the computer industry works. I've been in the industry over 40 years and had to deal with the IBM and Microsoft monopolies. Much of the text deals with dead issues like Beta vs. VCR and QWERTY vs. Dvorak keyboards. If you are interested in these topics, the material is complete.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Why Your Government is Corrupt
Just as a person cannot engage in immoral acts indefinitely without damaging his life, a government cannot continuously engage in immoral acts for over 100 years without becoming increasingly corrupt. If you want to understand why the men and women who run your government more resemble carnival hustlers than statesmen, read this book. In it Gary Hull and 6 other intellectuals ranging from economists to historians to philosophers examine and describe how the United States government starting in the 1880's changed from the protector of the individual rights of its citizens, it's only legitimate function, to the destroyer of those rights. For anyone interested in rational understanding Dr. Hull et al provide rock solid arguments for how and why Anti-Trust legislation came into being, why it was wrong to begin with, why it is so destructive and most importantly why it is so unjust.

5-0 out of 5 stars Abolish Antitrust Law: The complete case
The book consists of a series of essays covering the economic, historical, legal, and philosophical cases for the elimination of antitrust law. Particularly noteworthy, in my opinion, was the chapter by Richard M. Salsman entitled "The False Profits of Antitrust" in which he traces the attitude of economics and economists to profits, capitalists, and entrepreneurs over the last few centuries. According to Salsman the attitude is largely negative and profits (and thus capitalists) are expected ideally not to be there. This obscene view appears to still be the norm today. Editor Gary Hull's essay is also important in that it shows in the clearest terms that Antitrust laws punish successful businesses for their virtues (increased productivity and innovation) and are therefore profoundly unjust.
1-0 out of 5 stars pssst . . .want to buy a bridge in Brooklyn?
Where to start? If you're a "true believer" in Ayn Rand, this is the book for you. The thing than Randists seem not to grasp is that, big business is just like big government or big religion. ANY large organization exists for itself. There is no intrinsic virtue in capitalism, just as there is no intrinsic virtue in government. Mr. Hull seems not to have ever heard of the Robber Barons of the 19th Century or some of the more recent episodes such asArcher Daniels Midland or WorldCom.

1-0 out of 5 stars The World's Most Annoyer Lecturer!
I purchased this with the intent of getting a quick and easy method of reviewing basic antitrust laws. While the content of these tapes is okay, the speaker's monotone voice is undeniably irritating.Throughout all 10.5 hours of tape, he repeatedly clears his voice, stutters, shuffles paperwork, pauses to collect his thoughts and notes, and every few seconds, exhales as if he is bored out of his wits giving this audio lecture. The materials is dry enough without his lack of enthusiasm. Tape also has portions where it is obvious that they cut and edited it, as you can hear the tape being stopped. At one point, they repeated a few lines using the same recording. Unfortunately, once opened, it cannot be returned.I only wish West's had a refund policy.Find an alternative source. This doesn't deserve your money until they retape the lecture. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Strawmen abound
This book is based on a novel concept: instead of a dry textbook, a conversation between opposing sides is presented, ostensibly at a "trial".The format is clever enough, but the substance lacks. The expert representing the Chicago school is subject to a number of ad hominem attacks, presenting him (and thus the school) as detached from reality.
4-0 out of 5 stars Much better than expected
After reading the back cover and introduction of this book,I expected a rather harsh portrayal of neoclassical economics. This book does not end up being too crtical of the Chicago school.Of course there are a numberof strawmen in this book, portions where the expert is portrayed as an outof touch academic oblivious to the effects of his theories.Perhaps mygreatest criticism of this book is that it does not adequately exlore the"sovereign's charter" - the government maintained monopolies. The authors refer to the concentration in the airline industry withoutreally considering the effects of regulation that excluded foreign airlinesfrom domestic routes. In addition, the authors do not seem to commitenough attention to the availability of substitutes for virtually anycommodity or service.Even if the major airlines offer fewer flights froma particular airport in the long run smaller air lines will establishroutes. If not, there are alternatives like high speed rail.At theexteremes, one could consider technological advances like teleconferencingand electronic data exchange reduce the need for certain forms of businessflights.Overall, however, the book only takes a few hours to read andintroduces the major debates of this subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, open-ended
This is the same topic the authors have tackled intheir other books, this time presented in a somewhat screenplay-ish format.Once again it isan argument between theory and evidence. As you read the discussionbetween the lawyer and the economist you wonder why the economist alwaysretreats to theory in the face of evidence. It would interesting to hear aChicago economist's explanation of the facts Adams and Brock bring to bear. ...
