4-0 out of 5 stars Having trouble in your antitrust course?Buy this book!!
I was a good law student, but had big trouble in my antitrust course trying to grasp some of the basic concepts. This book helped me immensely, but is not a substitute for reading cases and struggling to understand what's going on.4-0 out of 5 stars Basic start reading for the begginer
This book is both a begginer's obligatory reading and a consultation source for the practising lawyer dealing with antitrust issues. It is also quoted in many foreign books about the subject, for example "Os fundamentos do Antitruste" written by a Brazilian professor (Dr. Paula A. Forgioni) also because it is one of the most comprehensive existing/available in the market. In my opinion a book needed in any reasonable office's library. As I have read some parts of it borrowing from a coleague I will by one for myself. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise Introduction to Antitrust Law (with citations!)
For the length of this book (106 pages, sans index), the delivery was very concise and dense. The book is both layperson and student-friendly; the text has citations that direct a more thorough understanding of the book (including a good article by Thomas DiLorenzo concerning the Origins of Antitrust that can be had for free on mises.org), and also utilizes enough mainstream economic theory to allow students to cross-apply arguments to current economic studies. 5-0 out of 5 stars Makes sense of a confusing area of law and economics.
Armentano analyzes and lays waste to the fallacies underlying the standard Chicago school economic analysis of monopolies, and how it has been applied by courts interpreting the antitrust laws.5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding tour-de-force
Dr. Armentano's book is remarkable and indispensible.Since it it short, do not expect it to be an all-inclusive study of the entire past, present, and future of antitrust law.It is simple, straightforward logic that is often missing when analyzing complex legal problems - even from most economic work in the field.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Interesting; Maybe Too Ambitious; More Off Base Reviews
I am a professor of antitrust law, and I read this book and liked it.I would recommend it primarily to lawyers and historians interested in serious reading about the history of the American polity's attitudes toward and relationship with industry and the relative level of industrial concentration.Bear in mind that Peritz is a _very_ big-picture sort of guy, and a problem with the book is that he perhaps has taken on too ambitious a project. In the legal academy these days everybody seems to be trying very hard to show that they are discovering the deepest, most abstract theoretical explanations of legal phenomena, and the resulting problem is that sometimes they claim to have found explanations that just seem too neat and convenient to possibly be true.I felt this to some extent in reading Peritz's book; you may share my feeling that there is something a little too perfect in his claim to have discovered the opposing "property logic" and "equality logic" that are the fundamental forces governing all competition policy. Also, as noted in a previous review ("Best in its field"), the book is palpably left-leaning, though Peritz himself never seems openly to advocate a particular position.1-0 out of 5 stars Inaccurate
Unlike the previous reviewer, I agree with the review entitled "A Disappointing Read".As I read the history of antitrust in the US, I am struck by how aware the lawmakers of the late 19th-century were of the fact that the alleged monopolists (such as Standard Oil) caused prices to fall and output to rise.5-0 out of 5 stars Best in Its Field; Previous Review Off Base
Histories of antitrust are not new, but this has got to be one of the most thorough and carefully considered so far. That probably explains why, even though Peritz is a law professor, it has been so well received amongst historians.Peritz takes an important step beyond most of the current debate about antitrust, recognizing that federal "competition" policy is about more than just one statute.Rather, our nation's perspective on the structure of industry and the relation of industry to government is an all-encompassing political phenomenon, with constitutional and philosophical overtones as broad as any issue concerning the structure of government.Read more

Editorial Review

Money and success do strange things to people, especially when they're not their own. Perhaps no better example of this phenomenon is Silicon Valley's obsession with Microsoft and its leader, Bill Gates, an obsession that Gary Rivlin examines with great relish and in great detail in Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars sad but true
Alternately amusing a frightening account of our contemporary robber barons.Manages to convey developments in the software industry over the past two decades through personality profiles.Reaches its high point (or low point depending on one's perspective) with Rivlin's contention that Microsoft's Bill Gates suffers from a mild form of autism, which explains his extraordinary talents in certain dimensions and his apparent utter lack of any basic interpersonal or social consciousness or awareness.

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't Judge this Book By Its Cover
Despite a sensationalistic title and a poorly designed cover, The Plot to Get Bill Gates is a wonderful piece of reporting. Rivlin, while an obvious admirer of the technology tycoons, presents a fairly unbiased (though tilting a little in favor of Bill Gates) story about the growth of Microsoft, the computer industry in general, and the ever growing group of anti-Microsoft competitors. It does a very good job of describing all the players in this game, following the industry for the past twenty years, and explaining the technology so even computer illiterates like myself can understand. Rivlin obviously did a tremendous amount of research, interviewed hundreds of technologists, and really put his findings together well. This book is well written (though the flow is sometimes interrupted when Rivlin seems to remember something he forgot to add earlier and makes a long tangent out of it), very interesting (though nothing terribly original is presented if you are well acquainted with the technology industry), and entertaining. I would highly recommend it for people who want to learn more about Gates, other technology tycoons, the technology industry, or just want a look at how competitive companies operate and interact.

4-0 out of 5 stars Insightful!
Author Gary Rivlin presents an in-depth, if not completely objective, look at Bill Gates' hard-nosed take-no-prisoners approach to battle. He follows Gates' campaign to create a software empire and annotates the enemies he made along the way. The book reads like a novel as Rivlin traces Gates' beginnings in Washington, where he first became fascinated by computers. Early on, Gates strategically manipulated everyone, even his partners, so that he was in charge and got the best of the deal. Rivlin cuts away some of the myths about Gates being a skilled program developer; from the beginning Gates was first and foremost a businessman with dreams of mastery. We...recommend this excellent, engaging book that will have broad appeal. As you follow the drama of Gates' behind-the-scenes maneuverings, stay alert for the business strategy lessons along the way. ... Read more
