5-0 out of 5 stars More Than a Great Book--It's a Public Service
This is more than a great book--it's a public service. The 5-0 out of 5 stars The bible of independent film producer
If you are or want to become an independent film producer, this book will give you all of the business/legal knowledge of filmmaking you need.Even though I have not finished the book yet, I've already found this book to be extremely valuable.Because I am planning to produce a new film next year, I even called up Mr. Tulchin directly for legal advice. He was very friendly and took the time to give me great advices and was very knowledgeable in not just U.S. based entertainment law but also international entertainment law as well.Read this book and you will find it worth more than what you paid for!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The 'business' of 'show business' explained
One thing that isn't taught that much at film schools is how many contracts are generated and how much time you spend negotiating deals. Our first film is still in post-production (April 2003) and we already have a filing cabinet filled with contracts and paperwork. I wish this book had been available when we started production. The chapter on delivery requirements alone is worth every penny. In it you'll find out what a distributor will want along with your film.Don't forget the still photographer on the set and behind the scenes!Great and easy read, too. ... Editorial Review

When we speak of race, we tend to categorize nonwhite people into rigid classifications--but how is whiteness itself determined? Yale American Studies professor Matthew Frye Jacobson looks at the American construction of whiteness out of its polyglot European immigrant population. In 1790, United States naturalization law granted citizenship to "free white persons"--which meant, mostly, those of Anglo-Saxon descent. Thus, Celtic-descended Irish immigrants were discriminated against. As the U.S. population became more culturally mixed beginning in the 1820s, with an increase in immigration from non-Anglo Europe, the nation experienced "a fracturing of whiteness into a hierarchy of plural and scientifically determined white races." 5-0 out of 5 stars great racial history
Jacobson provides a great deal of the formation of whiteness and how it has changed through time. It shows how the construction of a white race came about in America from Anglo Saxons to all Euroepans. It shows how legislation and attitudes about white ethnic groups and Jews have changed through time. It also takes a good look at how whiteness has been transformed by contacts with other races through non-European immigratin, civil rights and America's colonies such as the Phillipeans.

5-0 out of 5 stars Are "white" Americans "passing" as white?
Matthew Frye Jacobson 's Whiteness of a Different Color tells us all how we got into this mess. The book is subtitled European Immigrants and the Alchemy of Race. "Alchemy" is correct. It means that the "base metal" of Nordic, Alpine, Mediterranean and even Western Asian "races" were turned into the "gold" of unadulterated white status. Jacobson explains how "whiteness" was created by colonial elites for the purpose of defending the state from Indian invasions and slave insurrections, and continued by the American republic in order to create a sense of unity in its polyglot European immigrant population. In 1790, United States naturalization law granted citizenship to "free white persons" -- which meant, mostly, those of Anglo-Saxon descent. As the U.S. population became more culturally mixed beginning in the 1840s, with an increase in immigration from non-Anglo Europe, the nation experienced "a fracturing of whiteness into a hierarchy of plural and scientifically determined white races."4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent content analysis of a social construct....
WHITE OF A DIFFERENT COLOR by Matthew Frye Jacobson is an excellent historical summary and deconstruction of the social construct called "the white race." Anthropologists, sociologists, demographers, and historians like Jacobson who study race and ethnicity have suggested over and over that even if race differences exist they are not fixed (the definition of white has changed over time and no consensus has been formed concerning it's constiuent parts). The biological sciences provide no evidence that race exists. Humans with different hair color, skin color, eye color, eye shape, and/or other "race" characteristics straddle all the "race" groups. 5-0 out of 5 stars Not business as usual
I've always been perplexed by the fact that we run our meetings according to rules dreamed up by a military engineer more than 100 years ago.Maybe Roberts' arcane procedures about what can be discussed by whom and when worked once upon a time, but they don't make sense either in the modern business world or for making important policy decisions today.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great tool for developing effective communication
This book has great value whether you are a business owner, politician or public agency staffer, an environmentalist, a facilitator, mediator or any other interested party. It provides a simple, concise and easy-to-understand review of the consensus building process. From a communication perspective, consensus building lends itself towards helping any party in a negotiation develop a greater understanding and wider range of solutions that may be available on any given issue.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written, hugely informative
David Gutierrez' book is one of the most informative, thorough books available on the Chicano experince in the US Southwest. This book is not just for activists or chicano studies scholars. If you have ever wondered why immigration policy exists in its present form, or why racial tensions still persist within the southwest, read this book.It is very densly packed with valuable infomation and excellent sources, and it presents such information in a fairly unbiased manner. This is an impressive work of research that should be in the library of every house in America.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most important books in Chicano history
This book truly marks a turning point in Chicano history by interrogating the similarities and differences between Mexican nationals and Mexican Americans in the U.S.The metaphor of Walls and Mirrors sums up the relationship between immigrants and longtime U.S. residents:they shared cultural, labor/class, and daily social ties, but political and civic goals divided them.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book by David Gutirrez
David Gutirrez has written a unique and fantastic book on the Chicano experience in America. Fantastic read, and as a U-M Wolverine who has heard David Gutirrez speak in person, I can say it is worthy of the praise it has received. The man knows his material! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Taking Income Tax?Buy this book!
I strongly, strongly recommend this book for any law student taking an income tax course who has no experience in accounting.I read this book in the beginning of the class- it's relatively short and incredibly readable- and it made the actual class a breeze.Like most law school subjects, it's easy to lose the forest for the trees, and starting off with this book will let you understand how things fit together before you start slogging through- and get lost in- the Code.
4-0 out of 5 stars Much more engaging than you'd expect from a tax guru
If you get a kick out of the legal writers who make no attempt to hide their arrogance (Scalia comes to mind), then you will enjoy reading Professor Marv. You get the feeling that he often wonders to himself what it's like to be stupid.4-0 out of 5 stars As advertised
This book comes as advertised. It's a clear, succinct, helpful, and occasionally witty introduction to the law of federal income taxation. Chirelstein has a rare talent for making the sometime inscrutable rules of tax law accessible to even the most tax-phobic law student. Particularly useful are his examples (even his charts and numbers are easy and helpful!) and "Loose ends," in which he ties up a particular chapter or subchapter with some point of clarification that makes so much sense you're just sure your professor is going to have something about it on the exam. Which also bears a point of warning: law professors read it too! Beware of using it as your principal text, as, thorough as it is, the book does not cover all the cases and doctrines of tax law. I know firsthand that clever professors can and do write Chirelstein-proof exams. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent
I thought this was a decent, easy-to-read book with great graphs to highlight the points made. My only suggestion is that some of the Hypothetical answers seemed choppy and I didn't grasp a full understanding of how some conclusion were reached (ex. the Independent running for president who couldn't get a certain length of time on t.v.) ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Okay but you'll also want some study aids
Case books have a difficult time getting respect, because they have to include the opinions written by the different judges for the different cases. So, you're dealing with many, many writers, and unfortunately, judges aren't known for their entertaining, flowery prose.
4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Standard, Could Be Better
OK, it's a casebook.By definition it is just a bunch of cases thrown together to demonstrate various areas of the law.But lately there has been a new trend in books for 1Ls... analysis.Sure, this book has "Notes" sections between the cases, but they are little more than hypotheticals or one-line versions of even more cases. What about some essays?Talk about the logic behind the cases or maybe mix in some Law and Economics theory. As a generic casebook this is quite good, but adding a little more than just cases would be outstanding.

2-0 out of 5 stars The old standard--but outdated
This book is still used a great deal in law schools, but there are better casebooks now with modern, more interesting cases and more thoughtful analysis.Instead, try Goldberg, Sebok and Zipursky, Tort Law: Responsibilities and Redress. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars For the Discriminating Only
I'm a training specialist by trade, and I have taught Sexual Harassment Prevention and Equal Employment Opportunity classes for many years. This book allowed me to appear as a subject matter expert because I was able to offer more depth in specific cases and topics. If you're discriminating about your sources, I know you will buy this.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful
I read this book in order to survive a law class.I also used it when I had an interview with the Office of Civil Rights. This book may feel cursory but it covers a large array of material. For those who are constantly suspicious about facing discrimination in the workplace, it may be especially enlightening.Though I gave my copy to a friend not involved in the law, I do worry about it being misused by laypeople. For example, you could be blatantly discriminated against, and this book may point to cases that reflect your own situation. However, if you missed a statute of limitations or your employer doesn't have a sizeable number of workers, etc., your case may be a loser.Still, filing with local anti-discrimination office is supposed to be free and of no prejudice to the worker.Since this summarizes the everyday law, it is not a cute, easy read. But it is useful. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great reference for every educator and lawyer in education.
If I could have given this book 4 and a half stars I would have done so. The only complaint that I have about this tome is that many of the court cases that I am interested in are not printed in part or entirety in this book. I will have to go to the law library to get the rest of the information that I need. This book was not in my law classes, but rather in a class for school administrators. I am writing on and very interested in the legal history of education, and this was a great find for me. Not only does it give pertinent information about all educational law, but the specific references and legal issues are there for gender and race discrimination in schools, busing, special education, etc. Any teacher, researcher, or lawyer in this field cannot just pick up a book that is only on their area such as special education, because the full information is not there nor does it make sense out of context of legal history. In order to understand the reason why Congress and courts saw the need to coin a new law (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) rather than rely upon previous ammendments to other laws such as the Civil Rights Act and other education acts in the 1960's it is vital that the reader know the history and how those ammendments failed to guarantee educational rights for those with disabilities. This book is a vital reference that provides this information, the legal history, and it is well worth the money spent on it. Karen Sadler, Science Education, University of Pittsburgh ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book.... but not a international law bible
Ian brownlies'principles is a good survey of international law, but don't expect a full overview of international law. It lacks some deep exploration some parts, but well it is a principle book.
5-0 out of 5 stars The most authoritative, yet quite challenging for biginners
No doubt that this book is one of the most authoritative and orthodox textbooks in this field. With prolific cases and legal reasoning, this book offers a clear and profound understanding on "principles of international law," especially its Sources, Jurisdictions, and subjects, and basic theories thereof. A must have for those majoring in international law, I should say. 4-0 out of 5 stars but Brownlie says...
As mentioned by other reviewers, to even consider undertaking Jessup mootcourt competition, or any other major project in international law withoutfirst turning to Brownlie is to miss one of the most comprehensive texts onpublic international law. There are those of us who have comprehensivelysilenced arguments on a point of law with the phrase ' but Brownliesays...'. No international law collection is complete without this text. ...
